I Have a Theory

Really wanted to do some slightly Watchtower-esque odd groove stuff, so got out the Marshall this week, and while it's hard to just play at home (it just wants to be louder than you really should play lol) wrote some early 90's groovy type riffs. Still practicing the alternate picking thing, there's a middle riff that is a bitch to get right, while maintaining the feel, and wishing I could play bass better.

But that lead to micing up the cab, and noticed how easy the JCM800 is to record. Which got me thinking. It really is guitar tone on easy mode, getting a good hifi and clean recording is just so much easier on the 800. I am kind of fascinated by it, but it also makes sense that recording gear is kind of tuned towards the Marshall stack. Even though things like the SM57 were designed way before, but what mic did they use when designing the 800? I really do think it was designed hand in hand with common recording tech over the last 40 years. It's kind of self evident that 2 types of sounds and gear is still so prevalent in guitar recording, namely Fender combo amps for clean tones, and Marshall stacks for dirt.

Now the home recording enthusiast has IR's and software it is a little different, and there are some 'new' sounds coming to the fore, but I do believe that its hard to deny the sound of a roaring Marshall through a loud cab! It's not my everyday sound by any means, but its hard to argue with history.

Having said that, she's a noisy bitch. No effects loop, so hiss was an issue lol

Yeah!

It definitively works good. Love the thick tone with "absence" of low end. It fits so good in the track with the bass. And I suspect you didn't even have to low cut those guitars. And as you mentioned we are so much used to ear that tone that there is some confort about earing those tones.

Indeed, bareley any EQ at all, just clean and balanced straight away. Modern guitars have way more lows, but most modern bands seem to have no bass player lol!!

Wow. That's crispy, man! It sounds amazing. Nice riffs, nice solos and nice song structure. Very cool.

I love how each instrument sits in this mix. this sounds sick and had my head going several times. favorited

So interesting to read your observations about recording from the marshall. it reminded me of when i saw the Unsane and realized that they just go directly from the guitar (old strat i think) into the amp (marshall), no pedals. It was such an amazing sound to see live and fit so well with their stage presence and music. good stuff works good i guess.

helllll yeah! Love that JCM800 and the guitar work. Doubled guitar at around 1:50 mmmmmm. Killer drums as well

You definitely nailed the Watchtower vibe. Love those riffs!

Yeah watchtower sounds for sure, can't wait to hear more from you!

I'm just fascinated by the progression.
Deep down inside, I can't really tell the differences in the sound, or they feel too minute, so going by music theory instead and there's a lot of just fascinating stuff happening.
