Hey! Stay in your Lane Squier!

By Nyarlos on February 4, 2024 9:21 pm

Just wanted to get out the single coils this week, chasing a particular tone, basically the 'plexi' kind of mid gain drive that just suits single coil guitars. So got out my Hotted up Squier Jazzmaster and Tele, both are just base level cheapies that I have modified, and they are great, the tele was all hardware and electronics, the Jazzie I just swapped pickups and a sexy purple sparkle scratchplate, then grabbed the closest I have to Plexi style amp, the really underrated Laney Ironheart, another powerful versatile amp that just doesn't get the love it deserves. And it glows red.

Of course couldn't help adding my usual level of heavy to things that don't usually get heavy, but that's just how I roll apparently. All rhythms are on the jazz master and the gain level keeps increasing all the way through, back down for the break then the tele at as high gain as it could manage for the leads and overdubs. All dirt just from the amp, but it does have quite a good boost on the front end that is close enough to a tubescreamer type to be pretty much a pedal on its own. Kind of amused that a section or two ended up a bit AC/DC like? Maybe just the mid gain open chord thing, but amusing either way.

Great guitar work yet again! Love the tone and the whole song.

Laney's in general are incredibly underrated.  Have had a few Ironhearts in my day and an AOR50.  Whenever I have the room again, I will stock up on some Laney's again.

Lot's of top end sparkle on what is a somber progression.  Opposites attract.

Hey Panther! Yes, Im trying to find an old AOR, but unfortunately people in my town now seem to know what they are worth, so can't find a cheap one lol

I got mine originally for $200.  Sold it when money was tight, and have regretted it ever since.  Now they all go up for close to $1k in my area, so I just gotta be patient

Great progression too. We're familiar putting heavy where it has no business and this feels like it belongs well enough, or rather, it fits really well.
