Sparky the Astronaut

By NWSPR on June 21, 2020 11:57 pm

Happy Father's Day!  Here's a track for hanging out on a warm summer day with the kids.  This is my first all acoustic track and all instruments were recorded through the internal microphone on my laptop directly into Logic.  So this is my most lo-fi track ever.  Also, first time recording a melodica. Other instruments include my 5 string Yamaha acoustic (missing the high e string for several years now) and an old acoustic drum kit in the basement.  Noisy and sloppy but kind of neat low tech approach.

The song is named after this painting of my dog Sparky my kids got me for Father's Day. They sent off a photo of Sparky to a website to have the painting made.  Best gift ever!  Thanks Dashiell and Olivia!  My daughter put a message in my card that I'm still kind of cool for a dad even though I'm kind of old.  I think that means I am not cool and very old but she was trying to be nice about it:)

Enjoy the day and call your dad, or make him an ashtray or paper weight or something.

Happy fathers day man, and congrats on the new dog.  Sparky looks like an awesome little guy.  Thats pretty nuts that this was all laptop mic, the sound you get from it actually works really well with this kind of a tune.  You'd think drums would sound horrible recorded on a laptop mic, but these really dont sound too bad at all.  Nice touch with the melodica too, always fun to change it up with an oddball instrument like that.

This track feels like it is made of joy, chill, and other nice things. Really impressed at the quality of it given how you recorded it.

Happy Father's Day to you too! That's very  impressive the quality you can get from those laptop inboard microphones... Acoustic drums are pretty cool.

I use the high E string a lot. I would be lost without it. Anyway, this sounds great. I love the fret noises.

This sounds not low-fi so much. And it is a beautiful melodic piece of music. It nice to read about your family life and those sweet kids. Stay happy and healthy.

Thanks man! But that's my old doggy... my side kick and best friend of 8 years.  Just the paining is new smile

The drums were a trip and took 6 or 7 takes.  The trick was playing quieter than I would normally play. As a non-drummer, dynamics do not come easily so playing at even a moderate volume was completely distorted.  It still sounds like I'm hitting hard, but not really. Next time I may play the drums with my hands and not use sticks to see if that works better for the laptop.  Pretty cool experiment though smile

That's because you know how to use it smile Sometimes it pays to be a hack that doesn't know any better.  You ever see Mark Mothersbaugh play the two string guitar?  That is more my speed. Just for clarification, I'm referring to the higher pitched e string at the bottom of the fret board, and not the lower pitch root e string at the top. I would totally be lost without that since I am more of a bassist that plays guitars like basses with tiny strings.

Thanks for checking it out though... I think this track could use your vocals smile

The all-acoustic sound works really well for you actually and yeah, it's definitely impressive that it was recorded through a lap-top mic.  It sounds good!  Also that's a nice looking dog.  And your daughter was definitely giving you a back-handed compliment, but it's better than a straight-up insult, right?  Besides, kids can't be too complimentary of their parents or they lose street cred.

The picture of your dog seemed normal as I read the description and noticed the little pups head at the bottom of my screen. Then I scrolled down and find he's an astronaut! That's great haha. Such a fitting track. It's so relaxing and reminds me of tracks from games and movies where it's a relaxing, chill moment where the people are enjoying the small things in life.

Ha ha... I hadn't noticed that it's like a pop-up book.  You have to scroll down to see the dog is actually an astronaut.  Thanks for checking it out

Despite this being your first time full acoustic and on a laptop mic, it doesn't sound terrible.

Remember that growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional.

Haha Happy Fathers Day man. Caught myself smiling and laughing a few times in your description. The poor Yamaha thats been missing that high e for years. We all know that guitar haha. Ive learned a lot about production during my first 2020 WB adventure. One of the beauties is theres no right answer. Its all season to taste. This has such a SUPER cool lo-fi tone to it. I think thats what makes it so unique in the best way possible. Fly Sparky! Fly! Really enjoyed the vibe on this. Well done.

heh, wow. thanks for sharing. heart

Lo-fi approach but Hi-Fi result imho.   I wouldn't have guessed it was recorded through your laptop mic. This is a sweet feel good track.  The melodica part really brought it all together.  Also the painting was great. I enjoyed the scroll down surprise of Sparky lol.

Nice chill song, indeed good for sitting around the backyard, maybe as the day fades along. Cool painting, great gift from the kiddos. Mine didn't get me anything, but they were nice to me smile
