Pop Goes The Death Star

By NWSPR on June 24, 2018 10:15 pm

This song is my Popiest in a while. Loaded with pop tropes including a modulation in the bridge and a half tempo verse, full speed power outro that then... what?? The songs not over? That's right a come back after a kick and snare jump start, and then a fade. And a snare like a kick in the nuts from my trusty, very old Roland 626 drum machine beefed up with several reverbs (Gated Plate up front and big room pulled way down).

I had a surprising amount of fun recording this in between other stuff going on this week, like Checking out a Superchunk show on Thursday and then seeing Fischerspooner after recording on Saturday evening.  Both free shows in Prospect Park (Thanks Brooklyn!).

On other notes, Celebrate Pride Month! Trump's still a despicable shithole. Melania Don't Care, Do U? Hold your children closer. Hope you are all well!

Consumate skills on display here: everything fits perfectly. Great vocals!

Hurray, Brooklyn (my wife and I both went to Pratt)!

Man you got me.
I am feeling like i am 15 again...
That  half tempo verse is sooo cool aah ah ahhh

I think it's time for some old highschoolmovies today
My wife will hate it... but i try to convince her with this track wink

This is some full on power pop goodness.  Yeah, the slowed down verse is particularly effective.

Head bobbing goodness! it shows you had fun composing this, puts me in a good mood big_smile loved the jumpstart!!

Nice! pop it goes, great vocals, hook a rama, love that driving beat.

Everything a pop song needs. Those Rolands were perfect power pop machines :-)

This is great! This is the material The Cars should have done. Excellent drive and positive energy.

fantastic solid groove to build a song on! Great playing!

Fantastic effort for the week, super catchy and great production.

Great title too!

Thanks! That's really cool... Pratt is not too far from where I'm at in South Slope / Windsor Terrace.  I knew a teacher there named Rob Kimmel. Ever cross paths?

That is actually a good idea. Now I may have to do the same. Breakfast Club or Rock and Roll High School? Thanks for the positive vibes!

My favorite part as well. I really enjoy hamming it up on the Whoa Whoa Whoas. I was shooting for the style of a Scottish band called Dogs Die In Hot Cars on the vocals although they do it better.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm a sucker for the old kick and snare jump starter. Old school r-n-r.

Thanks! Funny you mention the Cars. I was trying to emulate their mix of multiple guitars all in different positions and EQ. They are kings of that style. I staid a little sloppy in the tone because I'm very weak on 6 string guitar, preferring to spend my days on four strings. smile

Thanks! If I keep adding tracks, eventually all the mistakes are buried along with most of my pride.  I listen back now after the fury of getting the WB track out and really wish I edited the vocal a whole lot more. But I did nave fun smile

Thanks! Yeah, I totally didn't fuck up the mix.  I get one out of every three or four right. This one is not distorted.

We were there 1963-67, so not likely...

Killed it across the board! This is pop heaven. I also dig the title, we both had star wars titles for week 25 smile

Oh wow, how did I miss this. So much fun and it's SUCH a clean mix!
