I'm Not a Believer

By NWSPR on August 14, 2022 8:59 pm

Back to the heavy synth punk sound again! I'm in such a raw mood, I only want to do angry sounds, and this one goes deeper in that direction.

Also this week, I'm uploading a reasonable 3 hours before deadline.  Last week the clock rang 8:00 PM ET (my submission time) in the midst of uploading so I was bounced out in shame and defeat.  I need to work on my time management smile

For week 32 (or Week 31 Deluxe Edition), I'm continuing with exploring the aggressive sound of the 1980 Moog Liberation.  Even more so this week with more Lib, more distortion, dueling synth leads, etc, and no guitars.

Boring Notes - FEEL FREE TO SKIP

My goal is to create an analog synth sound that can be as raw or aggressive as guitar in a hardcore / punk / metal context.  I could use digital emulation or samples, but that is not what I'm going for.  I'm trying to develop performance sounds on an old synth that can rival all the expressive nuances of a rock guitar such as pick slides, harmonics, whammy bar, chug chug bar chords, etc.  I can't do that stuff on a synth (samplers excluded). But I can do things like turn up the pressure sensitivity of filter or pitch, and mash the keys to get a new non-melodic effect similar to percussive picking on a guitar. Also, I avoid piano based chord structures like common triads (C-E-G), relying more on a wide chord arrangement similar to bar chord (C-G-C). There are some string pads and synth bass sequences that support the liberation as well so it's not all the same keyboard on multiple tracks.

Hope everyone is doing well.  Mind your deadlines.  Mind your manners.  Mind the gap.  Mind over matter. See you at week 33 if get my shit together.

that's the tastiest raw-anger i ever heard big_smile

Trying to get that aggressive distorted guitar sound on synth is an interesting challenge. I must say that the high wails sound very guitar like. The solo at 1:29 is also very close to a guitar, though the articulation of course sounds a bit different but the tone is spot on. The chug around 1:45 was really good too. I like this whole experiment and the soundscape you create.

Yais I was totally fooled on your previous track and said "oooh i like the guitar chords smile  Love the grittiness of the synth and the rhythm it has going on throughout.  With your vocals it gives me a bit of the Numan vibes too.  It's really cool how old analog synths have that living/breathing expression to them.  Oh that reprise_outro *nods head* \m/

I really like the gritty sound you're getting out of these synths.  It's definitely an interesting challenge to take on and the results speak for themselves.  Now I'm imagining some sort of hardcore punk or death metal band armed with keytars.

too bad i think davy jones wants on this track...
this dark nwspr sound is a very intriguing intensity!

This song sure is not a lot of things, but it is drowning in effect and also pretty

I love it, when you are in an angry mood and record it. well done

I fucking love this. (Also: 3:14 basssssssssss.) Are there other artists doing synth punk currently? You might not guess from my WB music, but this is 100% relevant to my musical interests.
