Cheetara

By NWSPR on May 22, 2022 9:45 pm

Cheetara (she's a Thunder Cat) was meant for week #19 but I had a technical issue with my file and it didn't upload.  I didn't notice until after the deadline sad Anyway, I just took the week to add more crap on top and super long outro.  A couple of interesting points for this track. The first is that I am playing a drum kit and recording through the onboard laptop mic which gives it a super distorted sound.  Second, I was doing a lot of yard work and cleaning the basement while listening to random music and came across In Through The Out Door, an album I haven't listened to in almost 30 years. I have fond memories of listening to Led Zeppelin with my best friend when I was a kid.

So this week's track is a combination of me playing drums through a bad mic, In Through The Out Door, and possibly some mild heat stroke.

The sound of drums recorded like this reminds me of the sound Queen got on We Will Rock You. smile The mix of synth and guitar chord stabs is really cool - that makes a great buildup. These synth lines take me back to the magic sound of John Lord and Ray Manzarek.
The transition at 2:50 is really nice - when you compare before and after, it is quite abrupt, but it felt strangely non forced, very natural. It felt like getting out of a tunnel and seeing the full view of the hills and landscape under a Spring sun. This feels like a celebration, I definitely get a feeling of elation with this track! smile

I remember Cheetara from the Thunder Cats!  I think you've done a great epic tribute to her here.  The intro was lovely, the distorted drums sound cool and bring a great energy when they kick in.  The outro was unexpected but nice also.  It takes things in a different direction but overall maintains the joyous vibe of the whole track.

No one told me I couldn't make it
Until I tried
I fell down and got up
Here to rub it in their stupid faces
And next time I'll kick ass

Missed you last week -- glad to hear it was a file issue instead of ... something worse.

The most impressive part after reading your writeup is the laptop mic on the drums. Holy shit, I would have never, ever, guessed. That's both punk rock AF and also sounds ... really good, lofi-ish gnarly sound, but something I wouldn't be able to EQ ever. The track is also quite a trip across these 4 minutes, the shift from the 80s opening to the organ solo to the kinda-classic / kinda-psychedelic / kinda-modern  rock music vibes (not linearly, but you knew this, this is your tune). Really partial to the ending section (guitar stabs remind of The Wall era Pink Floyd, and I don't know anything else that sounds quite like that, I was obsessed with that record in 7th grade)

Love the dirty drums sounds, sounds huge with the added reverb. Electric guitars are super fun, synths line catchy. outrow without the drums is fun too.

Wow, this is a horn of plenty. The intro is really nice and the beat, recorded with a laptop works very fine. The organ part at 1:50 really has this John Lord quality. It rocks beautifully. A total change at 2:48 comes surprisingly but is very welcome, too. The guitarwork on the whole track is very good and fits perfect with the synthsound. very well done. I even can hear the Led Zepplin influence a little bit.

I think the drums sound very good, in fact everything sounds really good.

hope you re-hydrated & cooled off!

super cool track cool

Good stuff! I made the error reading ilzxc’s comment now before writing my own, and he sums up my thoughts better than I could, so exactly that! smile The change at 2:55 and onwards is glorious. The laptop mic is practical music making at its best, as it just sounds really good. It’s not something I would even consider doing, not until now anyway. Love the organs.

Love the Bonham like feel to the drums.  Excellent orchestration with the strings and synths too.  The whole pace of the track doesn't let up.  The guitar tones make me super nostalgic too.  Awesome work!

Thanks! Yeah, the drums are so blasted out I can hear the We Will Rock You sound in them. I had the most fun with the editing the guitars by truncating and lots of gated effects... such an eighties thing to do! Going back and listening to Led Zepplin inspired the musical non-sequiturs.  They weren't afraid to change direction in a song on a beat, which is impressive in the pre-digital days.  Of course others like Queen did this very well, but more typically, bands like Pink Floyd gave a bit of runway before changing styles in a song.

HA! I knew you would catch the Thunder Cats reference!  Hopefully, I am not lifting it accidentally from one of our prior exchanges or your tracks.  Thunder Cats are Go!

What is that from?  Perhaps a Cheetara monolog?

Thanks!  Funny, I was TOTALLY obsessed with The Wall when I was in 7th grade (maybe 8th?) as well.  I had recently discovered Dark Side of the Moon the year before from one of my much cooler older brothers.  The Wall was definitely an album you could get lost in for months and months. And then the movie was pretty cool as well.

You know much more about drums than I do! I tried so hard to EQ them into shape but I couldn't figure it out. Just not enough sound captured in the Mac mic to work with.  You just can't polish a turd.  In this case, I just worked around the turd.  I was determined to get some drums in on a track.  I need to invest in a few mics and a lot of practice.

Thanks!  It's because I play drums just like Bohnam smile Ha ha!

Thanks!  My playing never gets much better but my skills at hiding mistakes and shortcomings keeps improving.

I had some gatorade to restore my electrolytes.  It's what plants crave! Nothing better than yard work and Led Zepplin. Except maybe paying a neighbor kid to take care of it all.

Thanks!  I actually had to place the laptop behind a futon so it was not in direct line of fire from the drums.  It sounds like I'm hitting the drums hard but I was playing ver softly to avoid distortion.  I played the drums first and created the song after based on what the drums would allow.

Thanks! I used all sorts of digital effects on the guitars.  Anything with a 70s sounding name or graphic smile The drums sound terribly trashy due to the mic distortion and the kit in the basement but it lent itself well for what I was going for.  Basically I got lucky!

Be cautious, this is an expensive, slippery road that road to close mic everything, then learn to 1- play, 2- mic, 3- mix nice drums... smile

Depending on the gear you already have, you can start with a single large diaphragme condenser in a spot that sounds ok on your room. It is actually way easier to go this way (and have a nice mono drum sound) than close micing all the drums then messing around with all individuals tracks...

It all depends on goals, budget... I personally don't have that great recording equipment for my drums and it is already quite a bit of $. (Focusrite Scarlet 18i8 first gen, adat presonus digimax 8 pre, I did find at some point a Focusrite isa ONE pre used at a nice price, so I sometime use this paired to a cheap ribbon mic as well, an older generation Shure PG 6 mic drum kit) I found a pair of RODE NTK tube mic used as well but one of those is at the rehearsal local...

If you like stereo drums, you would probably want at least 4 pres ins interface. (kick, snare, OH L R works great)

Anyways, good luck with that, if you want some tips about how I do my drums, anytime you can contact me. (A trashy mic like you did works great too... smile )

Hey, as long as you improve somewhere in the pipeline, the results end up better.

the drums are so good for a laptop mic wtf

"good" very much is not always "hifi", yes

Fierce and lovable. I maybe had a boyhood crush on Cheetara. This song fits them well. laptop mic, sound alright! heat stroke and led zeppelin are good nice combo smile
