Spectral Hotline

Something a little different this week. I found a minidisc of old material that I recorded maybe 10 or 15 years ago. Bunch of improvised jams in the studio, pretty blown out but I thought I'd see what I could do with some editing and creative production to lean into that sound.

Almost an hours worth of material on there, I may dip back in and try to salvage a few more tracks at some point. Nice little personal time capsule.

This sounds pretty good and took me on such a trip down memory lane! I also have a minidisc with material I recorded with a band in high school over 20 years ago... and no device to play it on big_smile

But I did successfully recover some of my music from around 15 years back. Pretty much all of it is either uninteresting or downright embarrassing, but a selected few tracks were actually promising and could still be salvaged if I still had the software...

In any case, we're so lucky now that we don't have to aggressively prune our storage all the time anymore. That's how I offloaded my old works somewhere, and lost that "backup".

tbh, loving the crushed and blown, gives timbre contrast.

Did the minidisc have that slightly vintage sound or did you apply filters on it to get that sound? Anyway, I think it sounds great as is, it is organic and feels like it has been around. The glitchy end if a cool touch too. Loved those samples!

yeah, I had a few old minidiscs laying around without anything to play them on up until a week ago when I decided to buy a Sharp MS702 off ebay. Same model that I used to have and made the recording with.

It’s cool to be able to revisit old forgotten material, but I totally agree with you – we’re lucky we have so much more / better storage these days 🙏

Thanks man, can’t say I’m particularly surprised that you’re into the blown out sound wink

The recording itself was definitely overdriven / distorted to begin with – not sure if the levels were too hot coming into the MD recorder or, more likely somewhere further up the gain stage chain. But for this rework I did run the entire mix through a Casio FZ-1 filter which contributes to the hazy sound imo since it doesn’t fully open and adds some aliasing artifacts.

Thanks all for listening and commenting ❤️

i really love this, it sounds like i'm listening to the radio late at night. it has a wonderful vibe, favorite

You should totally lower the speed and go for that authentic vaporwave a e s t h e t i c.

Closest to a time machine I will ever get to.

what a vibe, i love this!

This has a cool vibe! The "flatness" of the sound does bring me back. Neat stuff.

Oh wow, a minidisc! Blast from the past :-) love these classic vibes
