The Rite of Jungle

By NickLong on April 21, 2026 10:29 pm

A big departure for this weeks Weekly Beats
I was tasked with making a Spring themed drum and bass track and thought wouldn't it be ridiculous to create a drum and bass version of The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky (The bit in Fantasia with dinosaurs fighting)

Turns out the answer is yes it would be. So here you have a "Drill and bass" style remix of "The Glorification of the Chosen One" from the Rite of Spring.

My daughter says its the worst thing I've ever made, I'm strangely fond of it despite it being clearly horrible to listen to.

All I can say is I'm sorry...

LOL, I love it, and kind of hate myself a little for it :-)

Genuinely rises above to be even better than the sum of its parts. Great job!

it's a mofo of a piece! I listened 3 times so far. I would say anything that can be honored by the comment "this is the worst thing you ever made" is actually really good and worthwhile. tbh the high energy drums plus horror like melodies and weird tunings do it for me. great inspo!!! well done

Thanks, I genuinely can't decide if it's the best thing I've done or the worst. big_smile

Thanks!

My family who don't listen to this kind of music really didn't like it much, (they usually like my music), but I've actually had a very positive reaction from the few people that have heard it online so I guess it's just if you are used to glitchy DnB.

Definitely weird, but has it's own quirky character that makes it stand out from your typical DNB track. Good as always wink

Lol amazing and ridiculous and I love it. You really preserved the frenetic quality of the original and smashed it up 2000% with the breaks lol. Fantastic.

Haha the chopped breaks in 3/4 really did me in right from the start. I'm sure they follow the sheet music to a tee, but it does a terrible job of conveying any sense of groove if you're not actively counting along. But who cares? I'm totally here for it!

Love it and the chaotic ear candy goodness that ensues! \m/

What better way to make dance music than with Rite of Spring, the piece famous for time signature shenanigans? It does end up an inspired choice with all those caught snares (plus using a familiar break makes spotting those time changes easier). The very chippy arps and glisses like 1:00 are classic drill n bass silliness. I kinda wanna hear this pushed further: maybe an octave jump in the lead, or splitting up the melodies across more instruments for a call-and-response mode

uh yeah, I love everything about this. Solid AND ridiculous rendition

oooo love the drum opening, and then it just keeps going into a fun dance-y videogame-y thing.  Your daughter might think it's the worst but I love it.

this is WILD

and that quote from yr daughter made me chuckle HA!

Way to go and carry this through, it really is a spring themed drum and bass track, what do kids know any way.

Haha no need to apologize, this is awesome cool

I guess both you and your daughter are right: It's hella weird and great at the same time. It's perfect!

Cheers, frenetic is a good word for it I think!

It's part of the weekly beats thing I suppose. I could easily have spent double the time, but I'm already spending more time than I should be on it.
Maybe something to come back to.
