Henzl and the Egg

By NickLong on May 9, 2026 12:20 pm

This week I've gone for an indie vibe, but to mix it up a bit I put it in 7/8.

The theme is an egg being laid then wondering about what life will be like in the outside world before hatching into a bird. Inspired by my son Henry (Henzl) who wanted me to write a song about boiled eggs when asked for a theme. He's not fully satisfied as this is a hatching egg and he thinks the song should be metal.

Compositionally it's very vanilla using the classic sliding an E shaped barre chord around while leaving the E and B strings to ring. I did it on the strat I keep down tuned to D for metal which gave it a bit more depth. If I was being less lazy I'd have put an acoustic on it as well.

Tech Used
Bitwig
Eclipsed Solaria on vocals
Strat mostly middle pickup through Morgan and Misha from Neural DSP
Squire Jazz Bass through Darkglass Ultra
Modern and massive doing a good job of indie drums.
A bit of super plate reverb.

The lead sound I got in the middle and end was from Neural DSP Morgan AC20 and I'm super impressed with how much like a nice amp in the room it sounds even down to the lovely bloom on the note sustain at the outro.

Lyrics
Laid down in golden straw
Warmed by the feather
I cannot hope to dream
Of how I'll settle

The speckled home we made
Is getting closer
I know the day has come
To make my own way

Cracks are forming
Breaking out
My eyes can see the light
Legs escaping
Lungs are breathing
I'll be taking flight

Delightfully cozy with great vocal work!!!

To my ears, this has that elusive “sounds like a record” polish. And is great fun to boot!

Chill goodness, vocals are really good smile

Great track, really enjoy the lyrics but that guitar in  the bridge really steals the show - a very specific nostalgic sound and it works perfectly heart

Oooh such a good sounding song.  The play between the bass and guitar is so good.  The mix sounds great especially with that final guitar! \m/ Well done!

Man, great sounding track! Nice job using 7:8 in this context, gives it a really unique feel.

So many good sounds, and the mix is great. Love the guitar tones. I haven’t played around with vocal synths at all, but ye gods this sounds good…hard to tell it’s not a performance, if you could at all!

You need to do the hard boiled egg song next week as a metal track and just call it BREAKFAST 😁

Ha!

Funny you should mention it I've written a stupid glam metal song about fighting for next week and I'm hoping to cram a lyric about boiled eggs into it big_smile

Thanks

Really impressed with Morgan amp suite. I'm really surprised I was able to get that nice bloom to the notes when tracking guitars with headphones which usually sounds really sterile. It's like there is some witchcraft in the plugin.

Thanks!

I've never really been able to get that slightly grinding AC30 lead tone before, but I was really happy with it.

Catchy, really like the lyrics. Brings me back to late 90s in a really good way.

yeah those guitars are really tasty. nice mix too!

Haha love the theme! It came out great smile The guitars sounds really good cool

What a great theme big_smile Really like the cozyness of this. Great work!

As others said, this is sweet and gentle. The verses have one of your better melodies this year. Really like the rimshot (woodblock?) in the verses to tone down and lean into the loping rhythm. Really like the way the noise picks up in the coda as your narrator takes flight. And the phrasing on your guitar solos is so smooth. With a slightly fuzzier or darker lead tone, this could fit right in alongside Soccer Mommy or one of the rockier Julien Baker songs.
