UncleBin - Smokes money (2024 mix featuring Dj Storm)

By Nerv_hum on January 28, 2024 3:18 pm

So this track is an updated version of an old track. It's an hip-hop instrumental I made in collaboration with a coworker and friend Dj Storm. Him, being part of hip hop history here in Montreal (He was the Dj for Shades of Culture), accepting to scratch on my very amateurish track was a big deal for me and was very encouraging and gave my a good little boost of self esteem that i really needed at the time.

So this is an updated version of that track that I did this week because Dj Storm is releasing an instrumental album including some of his collabs.

I worked with what I composed originaly but layered some drums to maximize their impact. Cutted some parts of the melodic sections and shifted things around to give the arrangement breathing room in the right places. I also applied new techniques that i learned this week through my production class. I used digital clippers and limiters at various stages of the mix to control the peaks of every instruments so they didn't overload the master while trying to attain a competitive output Level. I'm somewhat happy with the results but there's definitely some unwanted distortion on the final mix that i'd like to go back and fix.

All and all, its a way better mix than the original version. More open, louder and a good hard kick. I'm learning a lot though by doing these exercises.

Feel free to comment or hit me up with questions. I'm always down to chat with other artists!

Cheers!

This is awesome, I really enjoyed it. Oppressive atmosphere that reminds me of old Def Jux, or maybe even Dalek. Really well-mixed.

Sick. Love the hi-hats and ghost snares.

oooh yeah I remember that one, really solid!
The super saturated sound really work for an heavy beat like this, really had to it's "weight"... DJ Shadow territory y0

...Man I miss scratching

I too also liked the weight of this track. Great mix everything was clear and thumping.

Sounds huuuuge

Dunno the right nomenclature, but I like this.
