the transmission (the pulsar suite two)

By neon liminal on December 1, 2024 10:03 pm

Dog emergency this week, so finished this one down to the wire and only had time for two takes from the modular setup. This is the second part in the "Pulsar Suite", and I'll let the story tell itself. A little tense, this one.

All my SOMA devices were involved this week - Lyra8, Pulsar-23, LyraFX on the modular and there's even a guest appearance from ETHER. It's been fun doing this hybrid approach - I'll patch the modular and my gear till I have a sense of the 'parts' and how I plan to perform them, record a few live takes, and then bring it into Ableton, chop the shit out of it and usually cut it down from around 12 minutes to a more comfortable 6-7. I think this process bakes-in a more organic, perfomative aspect - and saves me time doing a lot of automation and modulation in the DAW.

It also allows for happy mistakes, and experiments. The interference on this track was a really weird journey to create, and at times it sounded much more aggressive than I wanted - and maybe still will, come next track, we will see.

At the same time, my feel for this suite of tracks is that they'll progress towards more "composed" as I go along. I suppose that's the writer in me wanting something of a satisfying ending.

Stay safe, everyone.

cool to hear about your process. This is a fun series. Digging the narration that sounds like space radio comms. I can definitely see this evolving to include a beat then transforming into a melodic song of some sort, thats at least what I think of when I hear "composed" but you may take it somewhere else. Excited to see where....

i am fully invested, and grateful for your stunning work.
keep going, Friend.

I love how the narration informs the mood of this track.  Without it this could have been a chill if not pleasant way to spend 9 minutes, but with transmission it became rather chilling...chilling in that Interstellar kind of way.  Curiosity or exploration gone oh so very wrong.  I really rather impressed with what you can do with your eurorack, there is an organic flow to this track which fits a space/sci-fi feeling so very well.
(I hope your puppy is ok)

Best wishes to your dog. Hope he is doing fine. This track is huge.

I absolutely love how you’re using the “voice in the void” as a common element in this suite, the thread to tie it all together. Hearing the voice right away was a lovely callback to the first movement - and then essentially narration of the feel. The panic at the “…oh shit!”… And the the building threat of the music. And a clifffhanger ending.

Like jwh said - I am fully invested. Can’t wait to hear where this goes next.

Agree with everyone above, great execution on these tracks, again will be back for more listening.  The vocal samples are done so well to create this story tying the pieces together.  I've always had this little part of me that really wants to get into modular but then stop due to the cost and time to learn.  Last weeks track was inspiring, so went for a compromise and purchased VCV rack 2, so much to learn but already so satisfying making these little patches and then you get sound!

This pulled me in. What a story and journey. Sets it up, some mystery, then takes of out into the beyond and leaves us wondering what will happen next. It is a little tense, has me on the edge of my seat wondering. waiting. Cool you're doing a multi part suite. I agree about creating in a performative way. It seems more fun, but also all the other benefits you note like happy accidents.

Hey first off a big thanks to everyone for their comments and time listening. I've had a hell of a week with the dogs and haven't had time or headspace to listen to people's tracks/comments - hoping to do so tonight. The situation is complicated with my one dog, Max, but overall we seem to be improving.

You and me both, lol. Part three wasn't what I expected but still somewhere I wanted to be ... part four, who knows! Thank you!

Thank you! Puppy is an old dog having a rough couple of weeks but at present all the critical problems are ruled out and just hoping for some steady recovery. Eurorack is what you make it! I like it best when it's kind of like taming a wild beast. All that being said, there's a lot of post-rack editing and arrangement.

Thank you! I've had your track open on my phone to listen all week and still haven't had time and I feel terrible. Tonight I hope. It's been a hell of a week.

VCV Rack is absolutely one of the best places to start - and really all you need, and learning there will help with decision making if you do decide to build a physical rack. The learning, I think you'll find, is less than you expect - once you have the basics it's really just about experimentation. One thing VCV provides is infinitely modules and space, basically - which is also an issue, because choice paralysis, "never good enough" syndrome, etc... which a physical rack limits because, well, it's limited. So with VCV, don't be afraid of limiting yourself - "build a rack" with a set of modules and restrict yourself. Expand when you know why, not "just because".

As for a physical rack - they are great, they are cumbersome, they are expensive, they are a monster that needs to be used and controlled. I enjoy mine a lot, it's also a source of frustration lol. One big advantage with a physical rack is the tactile element - you can control multiple knobs at once, there's a physical response to your movements, sound, light - it does feel more organic. But also a pain in the ass.

Thank you heart and again, apologies, I haven't gotten to listen to your track this week yet. Hopefully tonight!

Thank you everyone heart heart heart

Oof felt that wide open expanse of space with that opening.  Almost star-trek for a sec but then it bubbles into the voice and it feels like I'm watching a distorted distress call on a ship.  Those lower pads combined with the higher bell-like melody has such a cinematic effect.  Oh and that blade runner-esque thud seals it.  The flaring synths sound so huge.  No idea how you do it but dang love the sound and overall journey I just went on. The ending also gives me that space is cold feeling **happily dives head first into suite tres**
