SNC Sketch 1

I'm chasing a sound, which means I'm chasing a design, a workflow, a setup, figuring out what works and what doesn't and to be honest, this might go on for a while cuz it's definitely a 50/50 working/not working at best right now.

This sounds "good" but definitely missed the mark all over the place for goals and that's fine. I learned some things.

This is my Gretsch semi-hollow, run through Guitar Rig to emulate a Vox AC30 amp and tremolo with a little bit of added delay and reverb, and then it's run out into the rest of the setup. This week, I kept it simple - recorded a few little chords into five tracks on the Tempera (a granular instrument that I'm still learning), and then after that was setup, just the guitar into Microcosm for some live-looping experimentation.

The microcosm aspects sound good but it's not gonna work for this project. The looper is a little too simple, and quite frankly, I can't do much else with a guitar strapped to my shoulder, have to use the foot switch to toggle the looper, and that means bending down to adjust effects, etc.... this just isn't gonna work. And while I was debating a Soma Cosmos as an alternative (and always am), I don't think playing live guitar and looping will be the solution for this workflow.

The sound is big wall of sound and it's big and granular and enormous but probably too big, too granular, too much dropped into the ocean and left to dissolve. I suspect some of the solution there will be elements added after the live setup - more guitar, possibly drums, possibly a more traditional post-rock approach ... I dunno. That's what these sketches are for. Lots of experiments.

Rambling. Too much to do.

I liked it.  Any song that gets me lost in my thoughts is a good one.

really gorgeous.  i'm excited to see where this path takes us!

Absolutely LOVE the guitar processing you did for this. May not be the ultimate goal, but this is 100% a worthy side trip ❤️

ooo love the guitar. Good to see you get it in there.

there's a cat with wide eyes somehwere on the internet.. that's me right meow.
Love how the guitar takes on this morphing quality where it goes from guitar to organ to superpad yikes
Like you just harnessed the power of a black hole! Oooh that chord at 4:50! The outro is excellent too. Love it!

Only you know when you’ve found the sound you’re looking for of course but i loved this piece and very glad I got to enjoy this stop on the journey. Has a lot of character and the granular really creates happy accidents in places.

Lovely guitar sound, amazingly evolving into ambient. Great moment, when the bass pad comes in. The long quasi fadeout feels as retro as it feels appropriate.

Great to hear a bit of guitar on one of your tracks.

Archetype Misha has a great guitar focussed granular effect and I'm also a big fan of Arturia Fragments, or Shaperbox for these types of FX.
