SAD PENGUIN

By neon liminal on July 1, 2026 5:47 pm

DADDY'S FIRST JUNGLE. Actually first thing I did with breakbeats in a serious way entirely.

This week's post brought to you by the RMR Discord Challenge, of which I am a helper puppy, and June's challenge was Jungle (Jungle June, get it?)

I grew up on jungle, alongside techno and trance, like literally I was in my early teens when the first jungle tracks were appearing out in the wild on the rave scene and underground compilations. It's not in my blood like other genres, but it's got its own set of distinct musical memories for me because there was a real energy of excitement when it first hit and it was pretty awesome.

I love jungle, love listening to it, dancing, and it's unbelievably fun music to make but I'd be lying if I said it was something I felt passionate about making, at least, right now. But - you don't have to be passionate about a genre to make it and give it its due honours, give it the attention it deserves, the deep listen, and put in the work to "do right" by it, and thus it gets no less attention than any music I make.

I knew I wanted to work this on the M8 for the chops and effects, and I got the "vibe" right pretty early on but definitely sensed there were missing parts. When I jump into a genre I usually saturate my brain with it by listening to as much as possible almost constantly, and I gotta admit - this was a challenge to parse. I could hear where the music I was listening to did amazing things that my track was missing, but I couldn't quite define the how.

Which is usually when I bring a track to Jeremy for a lesson, not just to fix the track, but to learn all those things that are missing and get a map for "stuff I don't yet know but can learn". Mostly my issues were with how I was chopping breaks - too many beats 2 and 4, too many 16th notes, not enough 8ths, and a bridge section that couldn't decide if it was a build or a bridge. Also a kick. Also I missed a lot of things in my preoccupation to not make DnB by accident. My sound selection was on point tho!

Anyway, it came out pretty good, though I think it trends towards PS1 racing games a little more than proper jungle.

Any questions, ask away - also, this would be my monthly plug for the RMR Discord (link above), which is a fantastic and diverse community of musicians. Discord access is available at any level of the Patreon (the lowest tier is very affordable), and this keeps the community safe from the open-chaos that "free" discord servers can experience. The people there are invested and welcoming and it's an awesome place to be if you're a musician.

“ this was a challenge to parse. I could hear where the music I was listening to did amazing things that my track was missing, but I couldn't quite define the how“

My day by day ! I totally understand your point here !

But in the end your music is your signature… like the others is their’s … if makes you dance and puts a f”””” smile on your face and makes you butterflies on your stomach while doing it … means something is very right 🤗🤗🤗😎😎😎😎

that kick tho, sitting SO RIGHT
will be coming back for repeat listens. fantastic work
that bubbly pause @ 1:30 levitated me
please give the sad penguin a hug from me

dang for your first jungle track it sounds like your 1,000th!  Love how the bass pulsates underneath the breaks.  Reminded me of Spring Heel Jack. Sweet interlude midway and love the buildup it opens up into.  Imma happy penguin listening to this groove! \m/

I'm glad I took a lil spin on your page tonight and found this one. Crazy work for your first jungle tune! Better than most of my jungle output bar none! Nice work.

this is slightly insane that this is your first attempt

my gold standard for jungle is:

does it make me want to play WIPEOUT or 1080 SNOWBOARDING?

the answer is: YES

Bad boy, great tune.
Like my fellow WB commentators, my mind blown on how pro this sounds.
Do you plan to release it?
You could definitely aim for a label like (not affiliated) https://skankandbass.com.
Excellent job!

That sad pengiun is a hella of a bop.

bad boy! this is perfect from start to end. love the little plays with tuning in some spots. great sound design, arrangement and some sweet ass transitions.

Spectacularly good for your first jungle track.

As you say def sitting in that PS-1 core pocket

It needs a video with a low poly cgi dolphin.

I'd be a happy penguin

So many cool things going on to keep the attention, just total candy from start to finish

This is dope! Love how ethereal and floaty everything feels. Also really digging the softness of the drums in this. Reminded me a bit of Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's ruin. There's something really compelling about layering soft breakbeats with a bunch of pads and bass hits heart

Really it’s the synth and reverb choice and bitcrushed vocals that land it in the sega saturn sound.

It’s great, though. I’m trying to pay attention to the 8ths vs 16ths side of this. I think I get it. It’s still fun to go brash with the 16ths. I guess I don’t think that deep about chopping my breaks yet. I’ll definitely start thinking about that as a concept.

Solid track! I didn’t grow up with jungle, either, but it’s probably the genre I have learned the most history behind since starting on my M8.

Nothing wrong with PS1/PS2 Racing games smile although I feel reminded of 2005ish EA Sports soccer games or later rally sims. Love the drums and the pads. The vocals give it some soul. Makes we wanna do something. Great track.

Amazing work! The mix sounds so deep and wide and dynamic while keeping the punch and definition. Loving the classic jungle chords, pads and vocal chops, sound palette is definitely on point. You still manage to give it your own spin with the lush wide open reverb swirling around. Also really cool how big you allow those basses to get, huge accents. Favorited!

Fucking awesome, man. And first try at Jungle? Sheesh. I may be the Genre Frog, but tackling an electronica genre intimidates me. So much subtle detail and texture, chopping, rhythmic considerations. Daddy Done Good big_smile

Love everything going on in the track. That breakdown in the middle before things pick back up is awesome. To me, one of the hallmarks of Jungle is that wubby bass that bounces around like a huge squishy super ball. Love the feel and texture you got on that. And I don't think I ever really noticed the kick in Jungle either! Bass is so prominent that it's easy to lose, but it's an awesome accent to the bass. I like how you pulled those layers apart a bit and showed how things were ticking.

I listened to a lot more Jungle in the 90s (due to having a radio show that would play it). I like it, but I tend to find it a little sparse and a little repetitive for my liking...unlike your track. Which is to say, I like your take on Jungle way more than the Jungle I've listened to smile
