VICIOUS ENDS

By naught101 on March 17, 2024 11:35 am

One of the last scenes in Cowboy Bebop, as Vicious is brought before the Elders, has this thumping heart-beat bass with nothing else happening.. such a killer tension builder. I set out to re-create it, and it turned into a whole track in about an hour, plus a bit to expand the arrangement. Happy days for another low-energy week.

Imagine tension building before a major fight scene, in slow motion.

It doesn't really feel that tense, there's no progression to guide it, playing a G over it feels correct and completely destroys the tension
But it's a nice beat, dark, minimalist

Great theme choice. I like the vibe you create here with this low bass and smooth beat.

OK.. Guess it's good I wasn't playing a G over the whole thing then?

I suspect you're using "tension" in a different way to me? I'm definitely not referring to harmonic tension (I rarely even consider harmonies), and in this case I'm not even talking about general tension in music, I'm talking about cinematic tension, which can be related, but I don't think it always is (e.g. it can be resolved by visual or narrative elements)

That's the tension I mean, ye
Dunno, the bass just doesn't feel menacing and the melody doesn't feel like it commits to a scale
Perhaps if you increased the decay on the bass and make it walk up a bit, see what that does?

had a friend who used to talk about cowboy bepop but never watched it myself - your track made me curious to look into the soundtrack & that took me down a bit of a yoko kanno rabbit hole - so thank you for that!

seems like so many of us on WB have these soundtracks to life running through our heads - i would guess more so than the general population

enjoyed experiencing your shared soundtrack this week

Cool vibe, little more cinematic. The bass and the little fluttering flangey thing really make it

Enjoying the crunchy percussion bits against the heavy bass.

Ooh, yeah, I should do that too! I just finished the whole series, still to watch the movie. The sound track is wild. Heaps of it's excellent, and lots of it (including the theme track) is unlistenable (which I guess is the point of Bebop tongue )

Thanks!

inject that low bitrate beat into muh VEINS
