SerraAngel Theme

This track is part of a commission.  VERY much outside of my comfort zone style wise, as they requested an instrumental pop punk track... but I gotta say it was a ton of fun to do the research for and produce.  Not a lot to say about the production here, it's pop punk, so you know couple guitars, drums and a bass, nothin fancy.  I will say I have been super impressed with NIs Session Guitarist VSTs.  The fact that you can add in like string slide noises, and that it has harmonic articulations as well as REALLY natural sounding palm mutes and the like is kind of awesome.  Very cool... still a plugin, but I think it sounds exceptionally OK.  Certainly useful for this kind of thing, where I had very limited time and could produce something that sounds natural enough without having to record 27 takes of every part, spend 2 hours comping takes and then another hour or two finding "creative" ways to compensate for my very middling guitar skills.

Still playing catch up after my family reunion, so lots of comments to respond to and tracks to listen to.  I'm not sure when Summer became such a hectic time... but such is the state of life now I guess.

Gave me instant visions of a Travis Barker silhouette counting in the drums with those instant pop punk vibes.  The Session Guitarist VST sounds on point and def doesn't sound as pluggy as some of those can come across.  I'd say mission accomplished for this commission.  Good upbeat summery triumphant vibes smile

i'm belting some nasally WHOA OH OHHs over here, you nailed it!  big_smile
and god, no kidding. feel like i can barely catch my breath these days. the heat doesn't help
may we all get the rest we need, happy week 24

You absolutely nailed this one! I love powerpop, punk, and punk-pop and this is a lovely child. The opening gave me big Pillows vibes and I was instantly hooked.

Ha, yeah, there's a preset in Guitar Rig 7 call "All the Blink Things"... it was featured heavily in this piece, and very much did the trick.  And, thanks.

Thanks... (人´∀`) and preach it sir!! Rest for all... Almost half way through the year though, and still drop tracks.  Hell of a journey so far.

Wow... thank you... I'm really glad that you got Pillows from it... kind of a crazy chain here... but one of the reference tracks I got from the client was "Mimi's Delivery Service" by Good Kid... and one of the first things I thought when listening to it was "This sound's like it should be on the Fooly Cooly soundtrack".  And when I finished the track I was sure they weren't going to like it because I felt like I went too Blink, and not enough Good Kid... so hearing that you got Pillows vibes warms my little heart.

It's a testament to your attention to detail and mastery of style!

Definitely Blink 182 vibes and yes, good use of the guitar vst.  They can never quite beat the real thing but as you said, they can definitely be faster to record and especially fasted to edit!

Thanks, I'm a big proponent of the concept that any instrument can sound good if used skillfully and with intention.  I think the NI Guitar VSTs are perfect examples... like, they are middling "replacements" for electric guitar... but I think they can sound really great, when you lean into what they are good at... that said, this track for sure "wants" live guitar play... but the client was happy... and I came in under budget on time (even with revisions) so they definitely got the job done in this case.  (-‿◦)

It's still very obviously not a real guitar, but that's okay, it works well enough. If you want more though, get some more organic attenuation and not be super on-beat.

Thanks again for the feedback.  It's funny, I get the "this is too 'on the grid' you should humanize your midi a little more" comment on school work pretty often (once before in WB too I think), and kind of humorously, mostly on tracks that I played the midi in by hand with a controller... which is also the case with this track (>▽<)... it is VSTs, but I played all the parts in (except the drums).  I think it that it comes down to it not occurring to me to humanize the midi I have played in, but I do think to do it on the midi I write in... so if I happened to be playing right on the click it stands out a little more because of the rhythm parts that do get humanized.
