SerraAngel Chiptune Theme

By Napear on June 23, 2024 11:08 pm

This is part two of the commission I was working on.  Pretty much the same track as last week really... but fully chiptune (or fakebit, for you purist types)!!! The whole thing was done using Super Audio Cart... mostly NES and SNES patches... though there are a couple with C64 and Genesis patches layered in.  All in all I'm quite happy with it.  It was a bit more work than I expected to "port" the track over to a chiptune style.  All of the harmony/rhythm parts needed to basically be redone from scratch and then remixing was non-trivial... BUT... I think I actually like it more than the original.

At any rate, hopefully I will have some time this week to do some more gritty type dark synth things... but with my pretty unrelenting school schedule, it's getting increasingly difficult to find time to make music that's just for me... so we'll see.

oh wow, super fun in the mode as well! that melody is so cheerful and uplifting and strong. you could really dress it in any outfit and it would look stunning. like i could hear this working in any number of genres.
cheers! hope you get some YOU TIME soon   smile

Wow. I hear a lot of great chiptune but this is a rare exception in that it really hits all those nostalgia notes dead on, especially the mix, this really transcends into the realms of pastiche (which for me is a tremendous achievement, I am envious!) really great. I am especially in love with the rapid shimmery arp that comes and goes, that was delicious ear candy heart. Great work!

I saw the title and instantly thought about magic the gathering. Serra Angel was like the only cool card I had as a kid. I haven't thought about that in years.

Thanks, writing melodies is always my favorite part of any composition, and this one was no different.  Ha, maybe I'll have to try the melody in a country western style to test that theory (ᗒᗨᗕ)

Thank you so much, that is quite the compliment.  Those arps were really a result of trying to keep to the constraints of the format... in the original they were chords, but back in the NES days, chords were very rarely an option because of the voice limitations, so fast arps were the "cheat" to get a full harmony whilst only using one voice.  So, I agree, they do add a nice bit of ear candy, and some much needed movement, but really it was the only way I knew of to simulate "chugging" chords with a single mono synth voice.

Haha, yeah, I'm pretty sure that the person who commissioned it, chose their name because of that specific magic card.

Really liking the nostalgic throwback here to those analog days and vintage arcade games.  The bass line and percussion are well matched, letting that melody shine.  Well done.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it... I always enjoy a bit of chiptune, it was fun to mix genres for this one.

A pretty melody to be sure, but the guitar made a very curious transition, why is it now an octave higher? It's also very dominating, which you can fix with some envelopes. A touch of decay can really make it feel more like a melody.

Thanks for the comment, I always appreciate constructive feedback.  This track (and the last one) were part of a commission so a lot of the specifics for tone/timbre/feel/etc were part of the brief and reference tracks. The changes here were intended to be specifically evocative of SNES era game soundtracks.  And, they have been delivered at this point so I likely won't revisit them, but I will keep your comments in mind if I find myself working on similar things in the future.

I feel like this could be translated into a punk song and work really well. Like others have said, awesome melodies and complimenting bass line. Killer.

Thanks, I’m glad the melody and baseline are landing with folks. They are definitely the parts I enjoyed making the most.  Also, funny you should mention it translating into a punk track…

Last weeks track… (。•̀ᴗ-)✧

Love how the melody translates to this version so well.  Such an uplifting fun nostalgic feel smile  Well done!

Thanks, I was pretty surprise that the "chibi" version held up as well as it did... but I guess thinking about it I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
