Protocol Glitch B

Ok... it feels VERY strange submitting on Monday... but here we are.  I'm kind of double dipping on this one, as this is a track I did this week for a class assignment... hence why I finished it on Monday... but I'm actually pretty pleased with how it turned out.  This track was mostly done on the Tracker Mini.  I sampled most of the sounds from VCV Rack over the last couple weeks, with the exception of the second lead voice, that's the trackers WTFM synth engine.  Then I did the final mix down and master in Logic.

Gotta say I'm really digging the workflow on the Tracker Mini, it's just very immediate and intuitive (for me anyway).  I'm really looking forward to getting a few more tracks done with it, though the newest beta community firmware for the Deluge has multi-track stem exports ƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ!!!!  FINALLY!!!  Which is like the one feature that has prevented it from fully being my daily driver.  I mean it lets you do a LOT to mix in the box, and there are a few work arounds for getting multi-track recordings out, but they are tedious.  So, I feel like having multi-track export means there's gonna be a LOT more Deluge music making in my near future.

Ooo yeah, I’d double dip on this too. Very atmospheric but still packs a punch.

nice work on the mix, Napear! that kick is so nice, and there is a LOT of low end info going on, but it all plays together like best friends foreverrrrrr

This really retained the modular feel through to tracking in the mini, really nice composition in the end and I love the synth swells and percussion. One thing to watch - and I mention cuz I have to watch this myself all the time - mid-high percussion panned hard left or right and sound very perceptually loud. For the most part it's fine here because other elements balance it out but there's a few moments where one particular blip is repeating in one side of the stereo image and really stands out above the mix. Great track though, glad you're enjoying the tracker workflow! Also jealous of your Deluge.

Unusual harmonies this time around! Somewhat spooky season themed, eh? Great use of the Tracker!

The sounds design here tickles my brain in a very satisfying way

Thanks, I'm glad it reads as atmospheric, it was for a "production music" assignment, so the goal was something that an editor could use in a tech oriented show, for interstitials, bridge sequences, and under dialogue, where each stem was kind of independently useful, and could be re-cut however they wanted to use it.

Thanks, that kick sound is from the Hora "Deep" drum synth module in VCV. I spent a few hours a couple weeks back just sampling drums from my various VCV patches specifically for the Tracker Mini.  It's funny I have meant to sample a bunch of things for the Deluge for ages, and just never made the time for it... then I got the Tracker Mini, and, even though it has very nice synth engines in it (one of which is a dedicated percussion synth), I still immediately spent a whole week of evenings synthesizing and sampling drums in VCV... go figure.

Thanks, and yeah I really love the Deluge.  There was few pretty major power outages in my area today, so I basically only had access to battery operated things today, and the first thing I reached for was the Deluge.  I'm really eager to see how well the stem export works... I love the Deluge for how much it is basically a DAW in a box... and it's for sure good practice to have to do everything with your ears... but you know, graphic EQs exist for a reason.

Thanks, and yeah, when I first read the brief it called for "90's glitchy synths and drums" sounds...  and I was like "oh, what perfect timing, I just spent two weeks learning something that is basically purpose built to do just that".  And (re: the harmonies) it's kind of aimed at "spooky". The brief referenced a bunch of Trent Reznor tracks, so the "tuning" on the various metallic sounds is kind aimed at that Reznoresque industrial sound, which pulls the overall harmony into less functional territories, but the melodic and bass elements are pretty diatonically in D# Minor.

I'm glad, that was very much the intention.  I was very much trying to lean into what the tracker mini does well, so I spent a few hours sampling like 10 or 20 different sounds for high hats and percs, then used the "fill" functions to get some neat patterns both switching between different samples and also applying different effect... and boom instant ear candy... well, I mean, instant if you don't count the several hours of tweaking and sampling modular sounds ʱªʱªʱª(ᕑᗢूᓫ∗)

MONDAY SUBMISSION!!! WOW!

so much interesting detail in this mix - feels like i have little people pulling levers in my brain trying to help me stop glitching so much...

Love the different percussive elements in this.  Those lil metal clips and blips especially.  The tracker mini sounds super inspirational for getting ideas down.

Love the delay going on with the percussion elements. Synth line that comes in at 1:20 is awesome. Also, great to hear about the Deluge. I haven't touched mine in quite some time because I've been all about that tracker flow on the m8 but maybe time to revisit.

The dark and moody vibe here is so cool. Like i'm seeing the inside of a villain's lair being built piece by piece.
Also awesome to hear about the Deluge! Looks like it's an amazing piece of gear with a really vibrant community. Happy to hear you'll be digging deeper into that soon! Looking forward to hearing what you make with it!!!

Thanks, and yeah getting all those little details in there is MUCH easier with a tracker in general, but like dead simple with the Tracker Mini... I mean, I did spend quite a while sampling all the hats and percs from VCV, but now that I have like 40 of each to choose from, getting all those little minor variations and glitchy details only takes a few seconds. I think the hardest part has been learning restraint with the fill function.

I'm glad you like those sounds.  Most of them were sampled from the Hora Analog Drums High Hat module in VCV.  I think there is one metallic sound that was actually the Hora Snare module with a bunch of effects on it... but mostly it was just like "tweak the high hat... sample... tweak the high hat... sample... and an effect... sample", and so on.  But, I'm really happy with resulting "sample pack" I have.  And yeah, I've been a fan of the tracker workflow forever, my first EDM type track was made with Renoise, and Polyend seems to have captured a lot of that Renoise workflow, so it feels very "transparent" to me, and ideas just flow pretty seamlessly.  So it does great in that "groove box" space.  It does lack a LOT of the mixing type power that you might get from something like the Deluge or like an MC-707, but I feel like they were like "well, people are probably going to mix and master in a DAW anyway... so there's no need", and that's true in my case, so it's kinda perfect for how I like to work.

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm glad you liked that synth line.  It took a fair bit of work in Logic to get the sound dial in, and there were a couple little happy accidents when I put some delay on it, but it went from something I was like a "ok for place holder" to something I really liked... Replika XT, man, it's like magic.

And yeah, the Deluge has come a LONG way in the last couple years.  The community firmware has really elevated the device from awesome groovebox, to legit hardware DAW... I mean when you start listing off the features, it's only really comparable with things like the Push 3 (standalone) and the MPC Live at this point. I love the Tracker Mini, and I'm glad that I got one, but the Deluge is still the center piece of my hardware setup for a reason. Total desert island device for me.

Thanks, I really love that imagery, I can totally see this under a dark tech "build" montage.  And, yeah, I've been noodling around with the Deluge a lot this week, and it's been refreshing.  The tracker workflow is great, but its very cerebral (for me anyway). But, one of the thinks I love about the deluge is that it lets me go back and forth between playing on the isomorphic keyboard and sequencing.  And, it's been nice to work with the more visceral elements of it's workflow.
