Lasting Embrace

By Napear on May 26, 2024 7:28 am

It feels like forever since I wrote a proper solo piano piece... I'm sure it's only been a couple weeks... but what even is time anymore.  So here is a little piano sonata in Gb major.  It's (my two favorite things) Alicia's Keys with a fair bit of Replica XT to give it some floaty vibes.  Really nothing fancy, just some really pretty piano samples, drenched in reverb.

Ahhhhhh, so pretty. Such mastery with that melody over the chord progression. Really enjoyed this smile

Love the left hand feels on the piano especially in this.  Gave me some Twin Peaks meets RPG feels.  Suhweet space_chorusy_verbage throughout and enjoyed that finish especially that last chord.

Thanks, and you know it's funny usually I start with the melody and then harmonize it, so (again normally) I would build the chord progression from the melody... but for whatever reason in this piece I started with the harmony, and did have to do some work to get the melodic line to fit... BUT, that's a LOT easier when one is accustom to writing harmonies for melodies rather than the other way around... and you know when you're recording MIDI straight to a DAW. I think there is one "wrong note" that snuck near the end of the Bb section, but over all I think the harmonies are really nice.

Side note, I lifted the main chord progression here from "At Last" by Etta James... I-vi-ii-V... which is an EXTREMELY common chord progression (particularly in 50/60 pop music)... and I expect part of the reason is it's very forgiving.  Because going from vi => ii and from ii => V, and from V => I are all movements of a perfect 5th, when you land on a chord tone, pretty much any diatonic movement of a 2nd or 4th after that is gonna feel like a leading tone for the next chord... and (descending) 3rds and 5ths are either gonna feel like extensions of the current chord, or suspensions of the next... so all you have to do really is avoid the tritone, and the occasional minor 2nd/9th... which is a lotta fancy book learnin's to say, there's just not a lot of "wrong notes" to hit with this one... if you aim to start your phrases on chord tones (3rds in particular) and lean into descending melodic phrases that is.

I'm a sucker for a perfect cadence, and the melody lined up to really nicely reinforce it in that last chord... and thank you, I was particularly pleased with the left hand on this one... it was... much more work than I would usually put into a left hard part, so it's gratifying to hear that you liked it.

And sign me up for a David Lynch directed Twin Peaks RPG!!!

Oh, this is absolutely lovely!!!! I love me a good solo piano, especially when it's moody and drenched in reverb ❤️
Great job with this one. Feels super emotional and vulnerable.

That was really pretty. I especially liked that section from 2:00 onwards. Nice sound and peaceful melody.

very soothing and tells an intricate story, well done.

well this was GD GORGEOUS. had to reach for the headphones, and may have gotten a little dust in the eyes...

I'm glad you enjoyed it, moody is kind of my vibe.

Thanks, I was pretty pleased with the B section of the exposition, and where it went after the key change... the development was a little abrupt, but I think it served well enough and got back to the home key pretty naturally.  I did quite like the recap of the B section in the home key, that bit was fun to pull together.

I'm glad you heard a story in it.  I always aim to incorporate storytelling into my melodies, to varying degrees of success... so I'm glad that came through.

Well done, really enjoyed this. So clean!

Lovely, bringing the feels ... it's raining on my face. Alicia's keys and the verb a nice combo.

Alicia's Keys is just an incredible library.  Clever concept too, she was like, "I have an awesome piano, and I want to use that..." so they sampled it well enough that she was happy to use the samples on tour, and then bonus, they could sell it to us... everybody wins.
