Forgotten Passage

By Napear on April 21, 2024 10:02 am

Ok, another little noodle this week.  I'm kinda warming up for a big school assignment that is quickly approaching, so I figured I would use this weeks WB to get some practice with the EastWest Fantasy Orchestra, as I will likely be using a lot of it over the next month.  Some funky instrumentation in this, Dulcimers, Lutes and Viola Da Gamba are the highlights... also a few Baritone Ocarinas to fill up the low mids... and of course the incomparable Ethera Gold: Sahara Voices from Zero-G.

I was hoping to get something longer done this week, but I lost a full 7 hours to reconfigure my modular so that I can multi-track directly into Logic... I have no idea why I thought I would be able to accomplish literally anything with a modular synth in less than 3 hours... but... it is now 5am and I must sleep... I hope you enjoy the borderline speed-trash fantasy noodle. (^◇^;)

nice piece! all the instruments feel like they occupy their own space in the song that makes me feel like I'm at a live performance, excited to see what else you cook up with the library!

Do you have a regular multitrack setup for your modular?  If not, I definitely recommend having something that's always set up and then it's a much quicker process.  I'll still have to repatch a bit as I usually do a lot of mixing/panning/feedback within the modular so I'll have to break most of them out into separate tracks if possible.  Otherwise just a stereo in!   I use an Expert Sleepers ES8/6 setup and it works well.

Those sample libraries came in handy this week it seems.  smile

Thanks, I've been working on practicing moving things around the sound stage with like deliberate intention and with specific mixing goals in mind, so it's good to hear that's starting to pay off.  The flutes in this track were... challenging... now that I think about it, the final mix down took almost as long as the composition did.  Lot of things happening in the mid and high mids in this track... very little in the low mids and lows... so I had to do A LOT on those drums to help bulk out the bottom end, and then to get the flutes to fold around the vocals without masking was a chore for sure.  And getting the compression dialed in on the Dulcimers and Lutes was tricky... they have a pretty big dynamic range, are also bright enough that they sounded really squashed and unnatural with higher compression ratios.  Though to be fair, the samples EastWest has out of the box already sound pretty amazing. So all my fussing was over the like last 5-10% to get it sounding like being in a smokey fantasy tavern or some such.

Well I do now... mostly, I have an Expert Sleepers ES-9 rack mounted in my desk, and (at least now) properly configured... the biggest headache was trying to get Logic to deal with the ES-9 AND my other audio interface so I could also track my Deluge, or a drum machine at the same time. I was able to get it to work, by using VCV Rack as a plugin and then using it to connect to the ES-9... but for some reason just creating a VCV rack patch with an audio module pointed at the ES-9 didn't actually capture audio... I had to create a VST track, with an instrument assigned (even if it's disabled, but it has to have an active plugin, that's NOT VCV rack), and then adding VCV Rack FX as an effect, which then would work as expected... so I then had to route it to an audio track to actually record... but it let me record from both interfaces at the same time... once I got the correct track delays worked out... BUT... after taking a break and eating, I realized it would be easier to just track the Deluge by plugging the headphone out into the ES-9 with a TRS splitter... which as a little frustrating to realize so late in the process, but at least now I have two Logic templates that work, one that tracks from the ES-9 directly, and one that can use my mixer and the ES-9 at the same time... so I guess it was worth it(???) ┐(´~`)┌...

Yep, that sounds like a headache!  Haha.   Did you try creating an aggregate device so you can run your ES9 and sound card as one?  That usually works fine.  But yes, my other suggestion would be to do what you did and run your other hardware into the ES9 also.  I've been tempted to change to the ES9 from the the ES8/6 setup but it's plenty for me and a slightly smaller footprint too.

This is why I don't do midi with my modular (or software in general).  Keep it 'simple'.  Hehe.

I haven’t tried to make an aggregate device, I didn’t even know that was a thing!  Thanks for the tip, now I have a project for this week ٩(^◡^)۶.  While using just the ES-9 works it’s a little annoying to have go to and from mini jacks.  And I have a patch bay setup for my main interface, specially to make recording random gear arrangements fast and painless, so being able to use both without my janky super template would be ideal.  So I’m gonna dig into making an aggregate, you may have just changed my life… thanks again.

Oh!  The aggregate device works a treat seeing you're on Mac.  You select that as your 'soundcard' and it has the I/o of both devices.  It's worth having a selection of 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch cables as it's so much nicer than adapters.

Good luck with the aggregate device!  It's in the audio/midi settings of the os.  smile

Just a minute, huh? Alright, we can't be banging out epic suites every week.

Nice wiccan mood in this one. I enjoy the vocals.

Fair point, now that I have the ES-9 in the desk and properly set up, I will definitely invest in some dedicated cables.

Yeah, I genuinely wish I had the time to devote to writing bigger pieces that I could upload and use however I want... sadly not there yet... but who knows maybe by the next WB ¯\_(°‿°)_/¯ ... and yeah, those Zero-G Ethera library are crazy... I actually got turn on to them by Aletheia a from their WB Week 10 submission... the legatos are legit unbelievably good... and they require so little fussing to make them sound realistic.  Best vocal library I have used yet, like by a mile.

Wow yeah vocals are pretty crazy, lots of places where I'm surprised it's from a library and not a real person. Agreed with DonutShoes, every part has its own space. It would be easy to "overdo" it on a song like this, I think your arrangement is so tasteful smile

Lovely piece. Vocals are just perfect for the mood and I love the instrumentation.

I have similar modular experiences, in that time requirements aren't always what I think they will be. I have to approach it a little differently and just play and be ready to hit record at a moments notice for fear of losing  something lol.

The orchestration and overall sound is just awesome and totally wouldn't have known you were pressed for time with this.  The vocals were a nice touch as well.

yes yes yes, you could mix the phone book & i would wanna hang out
heart

Thanks, I did have to resist the urge to not keep adding parts... I think the time pressure was working to my advantage on that one... like if I had started this piece with a whole day to work on it, instead of like 4 hours, I very likely would have undermined the simplicity of it... and you know maybe it would have been OK, but it wouldn't have had the same intimate vibe, that I think really works. So, Bob Ross happy little accident I suppose.

I'm glad you liked it.  I waffled back and forth between this voice and the "Ethera Gold Atlantis 3: Elven True Legato" library, which is also beautiful... but I think it would have given it a VERY different flavor, and I'm very glad I went with these samples.

Thank you that's high praise.  There are still a few things I (may) comeback an tweak on this, but I'm glad it doesn't feel rushed or unpolished.
