Bang Sue
Recorded in Chiang Mai.
MTR sound recorded in Bangkok.
Probably one of the silliest things I’ve recorded in my life.
Total jokes.
Influences -
Beastie Boys - silliness
Militarie Gun - one of my fave albums currently, like the shout along nature. Also that blokey kinda vocal style from The Chisel and Chubby and the Gang.
In Bangkok hanging with my friend, childish sense of humour came up.
Travelling around the city, we noticed many stations on the metro called Bang something. There was Bang Wa, Bang Phal, Bang O, Bang Yi Khan, Bang Phlat and so on. There was also one called Bang Sue. Like I said, childish sense of humour.
The word Bang in Thai means village, home, area with access to water, can also be used as a slang to mean excellent or great. Bang. So this song is like ‘Awesome Sue’.
High late one night, I’m not sure how it started but we started singing this high pitch weird refrain ‘Bang Sue’. It was kinda catchy and got in our heads.
We’d be reminded every time we rode the metro and sang it with other phrases. That’s the intro and made the chorus. I made a story about it that I thought would be funny for a song.
In the end, I think this was one of those ideas when not as good as was imagined when high.
Did over a few sessions in the week after arriving in Chiang Mai on Wednesday. Worked quickly just wanting a fun track for the practice of mixing vocals. Put a beat down. Recorded the keys in the verse whilst chatting with my friend in a weed cafe. Write vocals Fri eve. Vocals recorded Saturday after lunch. My friend went out to give me space to record vocals. Chorus felt too sparse, threw a guitar in. First riff came to hand, one takes for guitar and bass. Love doing those. As a recovering perfectionist, feels liberating.

Learn and tried something mixing vocals
I liked recording takes quick and dirty. Most of the vocals are sloppy and I’d have re-recorded and tightened them up if I was working on it longer.
Laughed and amused myself a lot making this track. Really enjoyable.
Learned and practiced some basics of mixing vox
I like:
Fuzzed up backing vocals for emphasis in verse
Gaps to break it up with the rhythm
Sound FX and ambient recordings.

Maybe double chorus at end?
Actually spend more time doing whatever the intention is. In the end I probably only spent about 2 and a half hours learning about mixing vocals. Still, progress.
Looking forward to next weeks. Have a few in various stages of completion that it will be great to use weekly beats to finish them up.
