ride or die

This week I challenged myself with no FX, no filters, and no distortion!

Everything you hear has been carefully (or not so carefully) designed with M8 tracker.

Well except for the one snare and crash cymbal.

HEY!

No FX, filters or distortion... That's a tall order, but you pulled it off!

This sounds incredible!!!! I'm SUCH an enormous fan of this sound pallette. Fantastic work here, I'd be super curious to dig into your project file. Like, how far did you go in your restrictions? We're you allowed to use tables? What about mods like envelopes and LFOs?
Anyways, I'm super intrigued!!! I might try and give this challenge a shot too, because I LOVE what you arrived at. Exactly the kind of music I would like to be able to make. But somehow I found myself l chopping up vocals of presidential addresses instead, hahahaha... Anyways, congrats, this is some fantastic work.

This track is so great! I actually wrote a comment last night but it got lost when the site stopped responding. But I had to come back again ... I wouldn't be able to go on without saying how much I enjoyed this! The chords at 2:00ish are super catchy, but the fact that you did all this without effects is even more impressive! Nice work!

I was thinking of posting a video breaking down how I did some of the manual effects and why they work, etc. Regardless, I'll bundle up tonight and put it up.

i needed a part of the track that transitioned from "we ride or die" to "are we are riding or dying now?"

Added the bundle for you to dig into. Yes, any sound design capabilities of the M8 outside of effects and distortion and filters were allowed. Tables yes, but only to modify the sound (not to apply effects, filter or distortion).

I think the biggest "trick" is resampling. That allowed me to simulate things like delays and chorus by manually offsetting the sample playback. Isn't that cheating? No, because an effect is a black box, your sound goes in, and comes out changed. In the case of resampling, you're doing the effect through sequencing and the "effect" is the culmination of those sequences. There is no effect.

whooooaaa this is good. The challenge did not seem to hinder your abilities to create so much depth and movement. So many cool sounds, dynamic range and great melodic elements. Favoriting!

oh that bass is DIRTY!!!  I love the percs throughout as well

sounds great dude! amazing stuff! algebraic!

No filters or FX is more or less chiptune, and you've crushed those bits really well. Amazing melodies. Really love that bass.
