SORCO

By mukti on August 18, 2024 8:58 pm

Started with this week with the idea that I'd play my acoustic guitar for the first time in YEARs, but realized I don't have enough time with it to play something cool... so I messed with the plucked macrosynth on my m8 again. I kept it a bit mysterious and dark again, and made something that I tried to feel a bit... magical? Then after trying to get a bit of a "cyberpunk magic" feeling to the track, I decided to pull some CCRU quotes about time, modified them a bit, and ran them through festival to generate the vocals. There are a couple other samples thrown in of me making noises, but all of the monotone, robotic female voices are festival. I spent way too much time trying to mix it well, so I hope it sounds okay! Overall I think it turned out pretty good, and I appreciate any feedback!

The track name is going off of the "magic" theme. "SORCO" is an Esperanto word that generally means "spell," as in a magical time spell that would be cast on you while you're listening to this track.

If you couldn't tell from last weeks picture, I'm kind of running out of "cool relevant pics" that I have on my phone, so I took another closeup of something in my house with weirdo lighting.

This is tight! I've never heard of Festival before, but I checked it out and it seems really cool! I definitely wanna try to use it in some tracks now. I really like the more tonal vocals that are mixed here. Fits right in.

looking forward to hearing you on guitar!

the photo is so perfect - is that bubble wrap?  the lighting and font are so good and spooky!!!  nice job!

Thanks! There is supposedly a modified version of festival called Flinger that allows you to control pitch via MIDI, almost like a Vocaloid. I couldn't find the actual software, but there are a few audio examples around, so I'm hoping I can find it on archive.org or something! Either way, festival is pretty interesting, and worth some experimentation, even if it's not for a track.

Gotta build up the calluses again, then I'm hoping to sample some for a future track. I've been listening to the new Porter Robinson album non stop, and I'm really feeling acoustic guitar. Hoping I can fit it in, but I'll have to come up with some brighter/lighter/happier tracks than my last two 😅

The photo is some metalic insulation around some pipes in my basement. I shined a blacklight and red flashlight in it for extra Spookyâ„¢ effect. The font is actually a free font called Ghastly Panic!

Big beat! Really liked the sample over the top, felt the theme worked with the vibe of the song. Nice job!

Thanks! I spent more time slicing and working on the samples than I'd like to admit 😅

Feels pretty mystical.
