Twin Pulse

By MRDRCAT on March 15, 2026 5:32 pm

Drone time! I have a bunch of "normal" stuff started, but nothing is coming together, and I've been really enjoying some of the drones people have been posting in recent weeks. It was time to dust off the Stylophone DS-2. I did some fiddling and patching and ended up with a subtle drone broken up by filter pulses, some of them inversed for an almost imperceptible blup that you mostly just hear through the delay hiccup. To add a little interest there's some slow knob twiddling that doesn't do a whole lot and the addition of the Pocket Scion, run through the DS-2's effects to make things cohesive.

There is hiss that I've tamed a little in Audacity but can't completely get rid of.

I am pretty happy with the setup and how things went. The Scion fit better than I thought it would (once I turned down the input volume). As much fun as drone is to listen to, I think it's 10x more fun to create. How come nobody told me this?? I was just fiddling and experimenting with sounds for about an hour before I hit record, so I missed some happy accidents, but the happiest one actually ends this track, so that's an overall win. It's a pleasant change of pace from the highly controlled composition-forward production style of the M8. I...might have to keep going...

Like walking through a sprawling landscape with dotted with all these little points of interest that leave a big impression. Entrancing work!

Cool drone.  It has me feeling like I'm frozen in place, but there are objects moving all around me and some of them occasionally pass pretty close by.

My favorite part was the slow knob twiddling that doesn't do a whole lot smile

Very cool drone, feel's dramatic and like an entire narrative is unfolding by it swelling and waning.

Lowkey fire song for a stretching session. Feel those hips and back come alive with the landscape

Halfway between a science video and a bunch of astronauts stranded on a dust planet trying to make their way over the dunes before dark when the creatures emerge.

this is a cheat code i need to learn myself when i have time to explore. very nice work doctor - tasteful and stripped without getting tired. the little variations and places we visit that bubble up during the track and pass by are delicious

that is the best - getting into pure flow just connecting and exploring with sound and knobs and such. and before you know it, it's an hour or so gone. love the reflections on something more emergent and improvisational compared to structured arrangement work. i do think that aids to the air of aliveness and abstractness that comes with something like this. in addition to the lack of a clear rhythm, we just get taken along for an organic journey with the drone vibration and other characters that show up. definitely super ripe for a thriller or space drama or documentary.

Don't mind a solid drone every now and then. Good for the nerves. I feel like I should be watching a timelapse of clouds going by or something haha.

drones are the best. even just listening to one it's very fun how easily it becomes the base environment you accustom to, its end a surprising wake up call almost. Good stuff!

You really are something else! This captures the listener from the begging like a good movie opening scene and just keeps you engaged throughout the rest of it. Hats off, bro! Cinematic!

Oh wow that's a nice one.

I'm biased, because I'm into (dark) ambient and drones (both listening and making), but it doesn't matter. That's a cool submission. I'd totally hear that as an intro to larger drone set.

Good job! heart

so good heart
must have been something in the air last week!
might just hit replay and stay here for a bit

super cinematic! I can't believe you did this all with analogue gear... and I can't believe you used Audacity!

Such an interesting journey both sonically and to read as a producer who hasn't explored that particular bit of territory.

bravo! 👏

This is an excellent meditative escape.  I really enjoyed those lil higher elements that float in and out over the drone.  Well done!

"The pulses are just a bribe to keep them listening" --Kurt Vonnegut, probably

Agree with others about the dune vibe, as the drone makes me think of singing sand dunes. I like that the pulses are spaced out enough that they don't fall into a straight rhythm, and I love the filter and echo buildup and different point, which gives each time they show up its own flavor

Thanks for taking my edge off.  Dig it!

Loved this. There’s a great sense of restraint and composition, and allowing things to breathe without ever getting boring. Love how your accents subtly evolve and grow over time….and your equipment gives that organic grit and warmth to it. Yes, even the hiss smile  So different from what you normally do, and so good.

Agree sometimes it is so fun to just sit down and free flow and see where things end up, I'm also always so tied down to the grid.  I like how you can still hear the hiss, gives a nice tone and wave like sound.  For week 12 I'm also using the pocket scion to sequence some software synths, did you play it with your hands or use the sensor and clips?

That is a very nice drone. Really made me feel like I was wandering in a mysterious vast somewhere.

I appreciate the comment - I was hoping the random fluttering of the Pocket Scion would give that sense of movement and space.

I think next time I need to slow it down even more and use the patch points to automate some virtual knob twiddling....

You just made me notice how stiff and achy my body is, but it's good to know. Time to stand up now I think.

That's a great visual, I love it! The bunch of astronauts probably wish they were watching a science video instead of trudging for their lives...

Thank you - I highly recommend experimenting with stuff like this (and I keep forgetting to do it myself). Especially during WB it's easy to get lost in the hustle of completing tracks that it can be frustratingly difficult to just get lost in sound.

You make it sound like I know what I'm doing! ha ha I just get lost in the noise thrills. But there is definitely something to it. Being able to focus on sound, slow down, and enjoy the hum really gives you a different perspective on what music is and how elastic our enjoyment of something can be.

Timelapse might help! I should try shooting one once the weather decides to behave around here!

Yeah! Some of the awesome drones other WB artists have been posting are just wild. They're captivating and really create a mood at a very visceral level, so not only does that sound become part of the environment, but it steers your emotional state as well. There's a bizarre power at work when you hit it right.

Oooo thank you! My go-to is usually dippy pop music, so being able to create something cinematic is a feather in my cap. I really appreciate the listen and comment!

High praise, as someone not sure about their drone cred, to get such feedback from someone in the know! Thank you! There's a drone show every so often (every month I think?) just a 5 hour drive from where I live, and I hope to catch it one of these days. Live drone performance with a room full of enthusiasts must be a trip!

The more drone tracks, the better! I really enjoy listening to drone submissions in WB, so hopefully I can contribute more as the year goes on.

Thanks! I definitely recommend trying this out - it's sound design for the sake of itself. S.D.S. does some really solid experimental/ambient stuff and has the patience for slow knob twiddling, and using him as inspiration I have been trying to up my game. The Stylophone drone synth makes it pretty easy to get something going and create some interesting textures, and even though the Pocket Scion is digital, being able to run it through the Stylophone's effects really helps the whole thing sound of a piece. (I only used Audacity to bump up a quiet recording and eliminate some noise - it's a solid audio tool all around, and the price is right!).

Thanks! That's the Pocket Scion adding a little sparkle. smile It's a fun piece of kit.

The filter/echo combo absolutely delighted me when I dialled it in, for exactly that reason! I really like the image of singing sand dunes. My brain always goes to space with drone/ambient stuff, but there's so much cool stuff on Earth I should try looking inward once.

Ha - plenty more hiss where that all came from! Thanks for the encouragement. "Restraint" is not something I usually have, so I was super happy this one turned out. I've tried ambient and drone stuff before, but I usually ruin it by being impatient or clumsy. Now I have to see if I can recreate this level of patience the next time!

Oh awesome, I'll have to track down your week 12 submission! I was playing the Pocket Scion by hand, since I wanted it to come in reliably after the pulse. Hooked up to my poor, abused spider plant, it was more of a constant presence throughout, which was also cool, but somehow made it less special. I wanted it just to be a pinch of spice.

Thank you for the listen and kind words! I think I'll have to establish drone as my WB go-to when I'm having one of those weeks where there's no time to compose melodies. It's fun and relaxing to do, and works as a great reset.

The pulsing of space, yes yes. I can drift and explore to this. Love the vibration

Droney pieces I find tricky because I find myself saying "this sounds so cool!" while knob fiddling and keyboard doodling, then when I try to write the piece, I'm not sure what exactly to write! The magic is gone... but not in this piece!! Sounds as good as it was fun for you to make smile
