Sympathetic Tongues

By miraclemiles on March 1, 2026 11:36 pm

Hi! Going to come back with some more words soon. Need a break after editing for a few hours. Time to collect my thoughts and reflect.

Been a while since I did a tongue drum focussed song, and it was fun. Nice to play it again after a while. And with mallets this time!
Recorded video of playing, will see if I can do something with that and share.
Improvised all of the tongue lead in one pass. I did loop a few parts, adjust a couple timing things.
Used a few sample loops for percussion as a time saver.

Started out with inspiration from this week's Disquiet Junto Project 0739: Deepest Sympathies
The Assignment: Make music focused on sympathetic strings, or something akin to them. https://disquiet.com/0739/
I used the sympathetic tongue drum frequencies to make the 5 or so tracks of droning business. I cut the attack/strike part out and just used the tail where all the tongue are vibrating sympathetically. Used Simplr and Granulator 3 for that business. Played with the Sting 2 device by Iftah to generate a few things here and there. Highly recommended.

[It's always good when all the tongues are vibrating sympathetically] Deep thought.

I was reminded that I do this vibe, nice to realize that I can be a little consistent and come back to a vibe I have done before.
Also, proud of myself, I took some things away. Didn't keep all million and one tracks I generated, but I guess I still end up with my usual maximalist density.

Well I guess I did have a few quick words to share

Would love any feedback on this. Too much droning business, too much mud? Would it be cool with more driving drums? Less drums more chill?

There's a nice snap to the percussion sound, I'm assuming that's the tongue drum?  The drone is powerful, but sounds cool.  I like it as is, but it could be interesting to hear versions with more/less drums just to see what it does to it.  Like extra hyper and extra chill versions to match your mood.

Love the hypnotic feel of the pulsing percussion and drums.  I like how the groove changes up at 2:49 especially.  Excellent creative ideas with the tongue drum.  They sound fun, I wish i had one smile

It is rhythmic and melodic. It sounds very good. No need to change your direction. Keep going.

I really love all the little percs and ear candy bits moving around.  Every single sound feels very deliberately crafted and placed... super easy to get lost in.

Thanks for checking it out. Tongue drum is the main lead thing, other percussions snapping along are mostly sample based. I like the idea of different versions, I often want to do that with some songs, but rarely take the time!

Hypnotic is what I was feeling, glad you got that. Tongue drum is indeed a fun thing to it. 9 notes can be enough but also feel like not enough. Tanks!

Thank you! I will keep going!

Thanks! Glad those bits sounded like ear candy bits and not annoying bugs or something like that! Getting lost in it is one of the goals, glad it was easy for you!

I love the drone and the tongue drum, and I think the rhythmic arrangement sounds great but I do have some notes!

But first, a disclaimer: I am extremely sensitive to stereo field stuff, and also don't always hear so good in the 6-7khz range.

The drone and the tongue drum and the low-mid percussion sound well placed in a "space" here that reflects  their acoustic nature - this really makes the little reverses every now and then really interesting and fun because they are unexpected and yet work really well.

The more sparkly snappy percussion doesn't sound like its in the same space- some of the highs felt really front forward and loud by comparison, and at times kinda felt like snaps and crackles buzzing around my head in a rhythmic fashion. But as a result they felt disconnected from the rest of the "space" created by the tongue drums.

And I think the difference in space and loudness between those high "airy" percussion and the tongue drum causes everything in between to get a little lost. There was other percussion in there that sounded great but I always found myself straining to hear them.

But I think this is just a mix and stereo field issue and as such relatively easy to tweak. The composition sounds great and definitely need more tongue! Lol

so groovy and moody, love it heart

That groove!!! It feels liquid and alive. I like the panning of the different percussions. It’s like an alien sea that bubbles up with reds and violets and pinks. Digging it!

I like the chill approach to this, I think this one works well with the minimal drums, I like how the droning is almost lost for a bit as things get a little more dense but then the return at 1:55 is so nice.

really cool rhythmic layers going on. Hypnotic for sure!

This groove is wild and that tongue drum has such a huge resonance to it. Cool track!

Thank you for listening and for the notes, really appreciate it! I see what you mean, you have a good ear. Gives me some good ideas to think about for edits and improvements which is what I need. I will likely call this one a keeper and to improve and release some day, and this will be helpful. Thanks again!
