Adjustment Phase

By miraclemiles on April 14, 2024 11:35 pm

Felt like an exhausting week of life. Work is work, is always work. But also I think the transition into longer days and Spring weather takes some time to adjust to. It's exhilarating, but also kind of exhausting - new chores and more things to do, and just so much seems to be happening all at once after the hibernation season. The solar eclipse here in the US was a highlight of the week. I'm far from the path of totality, but enjoyed the energy.

So I made a quick track this week. I'm happy I at least got one out. I seem to be slipping from starting tracks early in the week to much later. Sometimes that last minute energy works, sometimes it's not there, a risky process. To make this I tried out a couple new patches for the Organelle. One was a "sample-based 6-voice polyphonic vibraphone" called Pacifica! that pulled me in. Layered some loops of that and had some fun. Took some of the recordings, converted to midi in Ableton to get more parts, and added more sounds. Enjoyed the strings sounds.

Thought of some more ideas to try with this, but wasn't feeling the energy to spend more time. Grateful I got something out and that I had some fun with the time I did spend. Now time to go get some sunshine and keep adjusting to this amazing new phase of the year.

That image is great! It captures the atmosphere of the track just right. The feeling of the spring, the eclipse, and the drummer in mids of the field with a xylophone.
I like that section from 0:54, which goes much darker, like haunted by ghosts.

Good luck for work! It's great you were able to pull a track!

I like the sounds you have been using here. Also the drum machine sounds pretty old school. The vibe and rhythm remind me of the orb. Well done.

Ha, I haven't opened my Organelle M in maybe two years. Nice to see you use it musically! A lot of what I'm seeing of the Organelle is this "intentionally awkward" style that I don't really dig.

This feels rather complete, even if you say you didn't spend much time on it. Sometimes what comes naturally is best, turns out! Here there's a good exposition, a quiet B-part in the middle with some distorted guitar-y synth, and then the vibra returns for the finale, in a sorta kinda Phillip Glass way. The pizzicato strings suggest some tension, the drum machine fits perfectly... Honestly, this is one of my favorites of yours this year.

I agree the image couldn't be any more perfect.  It fits what's going on this week in terms of season and astrological events and from what I hear coming from the track itself.  I can actually picture you out in a field banging on cool percussion instruments.

I really like the way everything comes together at 1:25. Some neat instrumentation happening here and the drum machine sounds add something really nice. Feel you on the early spring exhaustion. I think my last 3 weeks have been throw-something-together-sunday-afternoon tracks XD I'm currently also in club "lets start earlier in the week again". So, good luck to us heart

Thank you! I often find I come up with quick middle sections that are good, and could be be their own track starters. Something to remember! Glad you liked the image. I love being able to create these AI images. It may need a ghost in it also now!

Thank you, glad you liked the sounds and vibe here. Yes the Orb, didn't think of that, but I can hear it. The drum samples do sound old school, I don't know what they were sampled from in the pack I was using actually. We're spoiled with sounds these days.

Wow, thanks so much, really great to hear this feedback! Yeah, when hurrying sometimes things come out ok, making quick decisions. I kind of liked just having these recordings from a quick jam and thinking well, I have a few hours to edit this up and make it interesting. I'm loving converting audio to midi in ableton, then using their midi editing tools, much improved in Live 12 as you know, to turn those into quick new parts. 10 minute strings here we go.
I know what you mean about the Organelle and the intentionally awkward, lol. I love browsing through patches I've loaded and recording, alway a happy accident or two to grab. I sequence it with the Circuit Tracks or something else, and for this jam I looped the output, nice to pair with other things for sure. Thanks!

Thank you, glad you liked the AI image, I find that finally when song is about done and I type some words, I have some ideas about what image I want to make. I sure wish I could go out into field and record some percussion. I will do that someday.

Yes good luck to us! At least sometimes the throw something together Sunday approach works out a little! Yes on 1:25, my fave part. Picked those drum sounds quickly and just went with it, glad you thought they worked. I was worried they didn't really go with the mallet percussion sounds, but fun to mix and match for sure. Thanks for comment!

Hey thanks so much! Playful but determined is a wonderful description. I think it's a wonderful life mantra maybe too? If you're going to be determined, might as well be playful right? But nice to just be playful and meandering sometimes too.

I like the drum machine vs bells sorta push and pull that's going on.  As always enjoy the grooves of your tracks!
