data life

Yeah, my hard drive is spinning right now. Swimming with music. I saw about 15 musical artists this weekend at the a local music festival that returned this year after its multi-year pandemic-induced hiatus. 80 bands total, two nights, 9 venues. A lot to choose from. Bicycles helped. Sadly I saw a lot of sparsely attended shows, but also got the rush of somewhat larger audiences moving together, lost in the music (I danced the most the band Down North from Seattle). And while its disappointing to see smaller crowds, it was kind of fun to quickly walk into a venue, get a great place to watch, and have no lines for anything.

So this song is mainly me playing drums and handpan today. Took a handpan noodle and layered pieces together, panned sides and center. Still deciding if I like that, some parts yes, some less. After seeing artists play live this weekend, I felt like doing the same. I also saw a local afrobeat band that got me moving, and I started playing some drums in that feel, but then pivoted. Other sounds in this are from the recent live jam with band buddy Monstrosus.
Then it starts and ends with the sound of a hard disk drive spinning up and chattering with data. I started playing with that sound in response to this weeks Disquiet Junto project: Record a piece of music that complements the hum and whir of a hard drive.

I feel inundated with data in any give week, but after the music festival and having many conversations and meeting new people, my data storage is even more filled that usual. My brain is a digital drive spinning up some rhythms from the depths. I just wish it could shut down with the click of a switch instead of chattering away all night long. Time to go search for that switch and get ready for a new week, and new data, and the best part - a new song.

Some really nice rhythms here for sure.  It's really great when live music inspires us.  I always have mixed feelings about crowds as an audience member.  I feel a little claustrophobic surrounded by people and sometimes you can't get a decent view, but on the other hand they can really increase the energy, and I feel happy for the bands if they have a good crowd watching.  I'm sure we've all played to nearly empty rooms before and that's no fun.

very relatable words. it sometimes feels like drinking from a firehose...
i've been working on building times of quiet (with screens off!) into each day, even just for little chunks - it's been helping. it ain't always easy though!
i really appreciate the creativity and sense of groove that you bring to your tracks, this one included. the way the clean guitar plays off the beat is so cool, and i love the sound of the handpan!
hope you have a peaceful week, mm

Love your drumming. So many ethnic flavors come alive. Colorful, vital and groovy. I would like to jam in real time with you, if we ever meet.

So groovy, really digging the afrobeat influence and the feel of your playing. Reading your description resonates, probably my favorite part of the few music festivals I've been to has been stumbling upon lesser known bands.

Glad you liked the rhythms, thanks! Yeah that's the mixed feelings I had exactly. I think I'd rather deal with the annoyances of a crowd to that band can get the good experience, and we can all feel the energy!

Thank you, glad you liked the feel of the playing! I agree, so fun to stumble on some lesser know bands, out there working away, much respect.

Love the super catchy groove between the handpan and drums.  I feel ya on the hard drive reference. I could use a bit of defragmenting myself smile

This makes me want to get those steel drums I was researching a few years back. Nice swing!

What cool concept, and I agree with the folks above, very relatable sentiment in your description. I love how you processed the tongue drum  for the part that starts at 0:55, the distortion/saturation really gives it a cool sound.

Glad the groove caught ya! Yeah it sure would be cool to have a defragment for the mind. I guess that's sort of what some psychedelic substances do!

Hand pans and tongue drums are fun! Glad you felt the swing! I like to get a little swing into the groov for sure. Thanks for listening!

Thank you! I think it takes some work to keep energy going into the colder and darker season. Just starting to notice that, so time to get in the habit of doing the work!
