‹ production notes
Pieced this mission log together from a recent jam where I scratched some vinyl, recorded some effected vocals, live drums, circuit tracks synths, and some sounds from Ableton played on the Push (couple instances of Drift synth). Scratch sounds from the vinyl, others from samples played on the Push. Used a Max for Live sequencer device from Maxime Dangles called Snake, let's you randomize and generate patterns, pretty cool. I had forgotten I downloaded this, but it was already on a couple tracks in the project. Nice surprise, went with it. The text to speech voice was from a Disquiet Junto project a while back where we made a track by having a text to speech voice read a news article. This is an article about a families search for a lost cat. Slow news week maybe. That unrelated sample was just sitting in this jam project when I opened it for some reason. Once again, nice when these little easter egg samples are just sitting in a project.
Didn't have a title or theme for this one after finishing. Chat GPT helped out on some titles and gave some space sounding options. I was a little surprised, but I did say "far out left field" in the prompt so that must have triggered it. I was also watching the first episode of Star Trek Discovery season 5 while finishing this. I like how they keep evolving their tech and capabilities in that show, but it's always anchored with some good character-driven themes. I thought, ok, this could a be space track, sure. We have the robot voice, and the scratches sound like maybe the computer is malfunctioning. Nice when things align.
So two tips I want remember from this week:
- Create a nice backlog of sketches, ideas, jam recordings that can be finished later. Helpful when you don't a lot of time for a weekly beat, just need to edit and arrange - done.
- Leave random additional sounds, devices, inpiration artifacts (cryptic notes maybe) easter eggs in these unfinished projects to discover later and send you on your way.
