For the Joy of Drumming (feat E)

And now for something completely different...

So I got a fancy little drum for my son, that makes lovely gentla sounds (similar to a kalimba). I thought it could help him release some energy and express his emotions to play that drum, but he told me this drum is way too soft and he wants to be able to really smash it and make loud sounds. So, up that drum went into the cupboard, and into the kitchen cupboard I went to get him some lovely pots and pans that he could smash with a soup ladle. (I made sure to take the sturdy stuff). And oh what joy, smashing those pots. And I get it: of course it's more satisfying to feel that you can make really loud sounds and that your smashing has a strong effect, instead of some gentle tones. (I put hearing protection over his ears, and he can be in a different room while he does it sow it's..managable to listen to in the background for us others too. But there might yet be a drum kit to purchase in my future...)

As for this song: I had previously made some weird electronic melodies on the computer that I didn't know what to do with, so in recording my son's smashing I thought it might be interesting to combine his drumming with those melodies. The challenge was to allow his drumming to have its space and not get it all too organized, while I still wanted to make something somwhat coherent of it. Did I succeed?

Wow! It's such an interesting and creative idea!

I love the concept!

It feels really abstract. I like your freedom from the implied "rules"...

I like how you left some of the drum hits unedited, it really helps us hear the "joy" in it.

Omg! Your monty python quote reminds me of this part of my life:

I feel like you should film your son drumming; maybe not for the internet... but I'm sure it will mean a lot for him to see and hear stuff like this when he's grown up!

Good luck being the parent of a drummer!

Those things are LOUD!!!!!

Loved the track, percussions are super fun. (Playing drums is as well, I know something about it. wink )

Take care!

Haha I'm here for it (this kid can be loud with or without drums, it's a process of finding ways to channel the energy so there are some calmer moments in between, sometimes)

Thanks a lot, you take care too smile
