Avaimet

By Minnamari on March 8, 2026 11:45 pm

Avaimet is Finnish for "Keys" (the word literally means, "openers", as Avata is "to open". you're welcome for this free finnish lesson.)

This song is like a story in two parts, or two chapters...that were written a year apart or so, reflective of how this issue has developed in my mind. The first part was written while I was going through a kind of therapeutical process of learning to express suppressed anger through screaming. So I tried to write a kind of punk song, but don't think it really sounds like punk, not so musch screaming, I mostly end up singing anyway. Which is fine, though not what I originally intended. The second part of it was written this week and is more reflective of my current state, where the anger has landed as I have developed a deeper understanding/ overview of what was going on. I feel like I got to the heart of it, which is generally my goal.

Can still hear some syncing issues as I recorded singing and ukulele playing separately, but it's sunday evening so I'll leave it as it is, it's good enough for this version.

Original Finnish lyrics
------------------------------
Avaimet mä annoin, silti sä et löydä niitä
Avaimet mä annoin, silti syytät mua siitä
ettet pääse sisään
Sä et pääse sisään
Ehkei suojakilpeni päästä
se haluu mielenrauhaani säästää

Avaimet mä annoin, silti sä et löydä niitä
Avaimet mä annoin, silti syytät mua siitä
ettet pääse sisään
Sä et pääse sisään
Ehkei suojakilpeni päästä
se haluu mielenrauhaani säästää

~

Anteeksi
Olisi pitänyt tietää
ettei avaimeni sinulle toimi
Jokaisen on itse löydettävä omat avaimensa sisältään

Mä vaan haluaisin auttaa
Mutta en voi sua auttaa
Kukaan ei voi antaa omia avaimiaan
Se on jokaisen oma haaste
Enkä mä voi kulkea sun matkaa sinun puolestasi
Se on sinun kuljettava

Mä vaan halusin auttaa ja annoin avaimet
joita sä et edes osaa käyttää
Ja sitten vielä suutuin siitä
ettet osaa käyttää niitä

Anteeksi
Sä kyllä vielä löydät ehkä avaimesi
omalla ajallasi, omalla tavallasi

Lyrics translated to English
---------------------------------
I gave the keys, still you can't find them
I gave the keys, and still you blame me
for not getting in
You can't get in
Maybe my protective shield won't let you
it wants to save my peace of mind

I gave the keys, still you can't find them
I gave the keys, and still you blame me
for not getting in
You can't get in
Maybe my protective shield won't let you
it wants to save my peace of mind

~

Sorry
I should have known
that my keys won't work for you
Everyone has to find their own keys inside themselves

I would just want to help
But I can't help you
No one can give their own keys
That's everyone's own challenge
And I can't walk your path for you
That's yours to walk

I just wanted to help and gave keys
that you can't even use
And then I even got angry
that you can't use them

Sorry
You'll probably find your keys still
on your own time, in your own way

Anger can be such a powerful drive that can be used for good or bad...

I think we should be angry, for a lot of incoherence and injustice that occurs in the world. The hard part is to use this anger as a motor for good.

Nice vibe, you feel "in peace" delivering this song.

Take care!

Tbh i love listening to music in languages besides English even though I dont know what being said (thank you for your translation, it was very helpful)

such a haunting beautiful melody with your vocals and the uke.  excellent work!

i really like when your second higher vocal comes in to harmonize with your other self. it almost felt like current you meeting up with past you to sign the song together. i mean, i guess technically that is what is happening!
thank you for the Finnish lesson too  smile

Interesting perspective! Also realized it was a vocalization between lower and higher pitches (a metaphor for lower and higher self, perhaps)

Thanks for listening! I agree, it cool to expand the horizons to other languages and hearing different ways of expressing. smile

Very very true. "Motor for good" is exactly it. Thanks a lot!

I really like this, the ukulele melodies are super interesting and kept me hooked to the song. I hope processing the feelings through song helped!

Thank you, that means a lot. Particularly as I often wonder if the ukulele sounds annoying cause I just play it as I feel, without thinking much of "technique". Yeah, music is a lifesaver, helps me so much with emotional processing
