ZSJ7- The Lament of Don Draper

By Maritalstreep on February 14, 2026 2:18 pm

I wrote this song last week, and I've been going on a bit of a "Mad Men" rewatch...
So I took 2 of my favorite Don Draper lines- when he tells Peggy "It will shock you how much it never happened" while she is in the hospital after giving up her baby in season 1, and the famous elevator meme where he tells the other writer "I don't even think about you at all". I have always loved the idea of how Don reinvented his identity from being Dick Whitman, so i wanted to write a song about recreating yourself into a new persona.
I have no idea if my harmonies ever work, I always want to perfect that shoegaze/dreamy Hope Sandoval sound, but I probably don't have the voice or production skills for it.
For the record, my other favorite "Mad Men" line is in "The Suitcase" when Peggy is saying she doesn't get enough credit and Don says "That's what the money is for!"

Nice and heavy! This has got a bit of a NIN vibe, too it, too!

Thank you! I'm going to see them play in Milwaukee next week.

Never saw mad men but that sounds like an interesting character, it'd fun when different media and stories bring inspiration to a creation. Like a communication in the imaginam realm. I'm always in awe of your drum machines. Can you share lyrics so I can spot the quotes? smile

Reminds me of possibly my favorite line ever spoken in cinema. Mikey Bergman in Heist: “Everybody needs money. That’s why they call it money!”

"808 handclaps are my love language." I lolled!! XD!! heart!!

I can really feel your identity as a drummer come through; it's a really powerful rhythm!
