Seconds Before The Snowstorm

By Lizenn on January 11, 2026 5:36 pm

I got to see snow falling for the first time in years in my place. It was kinda magical and I wanted to make something inspired by the cold and the snow and still explore the ways of MIDI, Reaper and electronic composition in general.

I'm really uncertain about the sounds of the synths but I use pre-made presets for Hybrid, and I feel like I have so much limitation not knowing how to really make sounds with the synthetizer. Probably one of my next step is to be able to create the sounds I have in my mind but man... It's so hard ! And so I learned that some of my synths were really out of tune (I must be tone deaf because I just didn't heard it...) and doing weird tone stuff. That's what you get for using presets you don't understand :'D

I'm not sure I'm satisfied a lot about this arrangement. The transitions feel kinda wierd bad but... Anyway ! I also wonder if I'm on the "too much" side or not. I tried a lot of automations and overlap of basses and stuff, and I'm kinda scared it gets a bit heavy to make something clear and good enough.

Thanks in advance if you take time to listen to this and give any sort of feedback or advice !

I love the tuning of this piece in the beginning regardless of what you say! It's my favorite part. It totally works for me. Very tastefully selected sounds.

Don't fear the preset! I use them as well, it can be a good starting point to understand certain techniques you want to learn. I recall seeing an interview with Four Tet where they admit to using presets extensively, so they can focus on the composition.

Oh wow, I was already super enjoying the more chippy side of the track, then a kind of hip-hop beat came in and I like it even more now!!! Super nice!!!

I'm very happy that you enjoyed it ! I may be harsh on myself, not a lot of confidence, but I'm really glad if you had a good time listening ! I still don't really have a clue on what I really want to learn (that may be the problem, I'm not very good at organizing and learning :DD) but doing something is already a nice achievement for me ! Thank you very much for your words !

Thank you very much !! So glad you liked it !

Honestly, that's what presets are for
the only thing you might want to do with them is know how to tweak them a little bit

The out-of-tune may have been unintentional, but I think it sounds great - that bit of dissonance adds some tension I really enjoyed. The sections in this are great - lots of contrast between them, but they flow perfectly together. Liked this a lot!
