Broken Sixth-Grader

By Lizenn on February 8, 2026 3:59 pm

It's the most work I ever did on a track. Having listened and worked hours and hours on this one I'm not sure I actually like it (we'll see in one or two weeks :DD) but I'm proud on the work I did on this.

MASSIVE thanks to my close friends Ducky and Yoran who helped me respectively with learning chords theory and Drum/Bass composition. If there's no absurd chords popping and if the drums are that great it's all thank to them.

I wanted to make a kinda math rock-ish/japanese rock song this week, because I LOVE this kind of music but I lack the technical knowledge and ability to really be able to do that. But unability is another word for having to work more. I'll never be Tim Hendson but I tried to make someting that sounded good, and sounded close to songs I like.

I also REALLY wanted to sing this week again but it took so much work and time to get there that I ended up lacking enough time and energy, too bad. Maybe next time !

I also wanted to really thank you all. All the kind words and advices that this community gave me is such a treasure for me and makes me so happy and just want to keep on going and do more and more. I was always so scared to create and felt just like a shitty musician. I KNOW for a fact that doing is the only way to get better. That what sets me on this goal, but having compliments and positive returns by the amazing artists from this community is starting to make me believe myself a bit more. So a huge, gigantic, collossal, interplanetary thank to all of you.

Keep on creating, keep on believing !

Amazing! Just phenomenal tones and playing. Excellent work!

This is excellent! Love the guitar tones

you definitely nailed the Japanese math-rock / mid-west emo sound!

yo nice to hear this riff in full context! sounds GREAT! it kinda has that folky sound with the aksak tempo (learned this term from Romanian music theory that doesn't actually have a word for swing if u can believe it. but it applies to any 2+3 type mixed rhythms) but also rocking with those tasty guitars!

LOVE the distortion starting at 3min-ish!

if I may be annoying with some feedback on the drums, or maybe better phrased as a question for you and any who come by: how did u go about accentuating the beat? to me the drums have a slightly different groove accent-wise than the guitar, and it's not that it should always hit the same accents, but I feel like it doesn't reinforce the main groove of 7+6+whatever it was, and sometimes enters on the upbeat/downbeat while the guitar does the reverse, so altho it's already hard to follow this makes it even more confusing. But maybe that was the whole intention so it's not necessarily a bad thing! with math- and prog- stuff it's nice to be confused and let the crazy compositions just take you on a journey haha.

anyway nice work and great to hear you are feeling good about creating! super inspiring to see how ppl are making progress on their music!

Oh wow there so much interesting music theory in other countries folk music that I don't know about. That seems so interesting !

BE ANNOYING, I'M HERE FOR THAT :DD. To be honest I'm really not knowledgable at making drums so I got help and for the parts that I made on my own, I didn't really made it thoughtfully, just tried to make stuff that sounded good to my ear. But I get that there's a lot happening with the drums and that it may be confusing. I really wanted to play around with the rythm for sure but on the other hand I really don't have the confidence to say "everything was planned" haha ! I mostly went with the flow and tried to go the way I like the music, kinda math rockish and groovy if that makes sense ? But for it being confusing and not perfect is no surprise to me, I still have so much to learn ! Thank you so much on your comment, I'll keep that in mind. I know that sometimes doing less is better than doing too much, but it's always hard for me to figure when it's too much and when my brain say it's not enough !

really lovely and hypnotic!

Ahh cool! Well glad to get into it then. I'm also beginner on making drums even tho I've been at it for a long time, but that thing about keeping a predictable accent is something I learned from my drummer, and when drums and bass, or drums and more instruments, keep the same accent, that's when grooves really start to shine. And especially when playing unusual rhythms, that can make it feel natural even for listeners who are not used to it! I am still learning tho, so yea looking forward to hear your progress too big_smile

Excellent work! An absolute pleasure to listen to.

I like the melody. I definitely get the vibe you mention.

Yep that makes sense, but also...what about the SURPRISES ? :DD (Maybe I overdid it on surprises...). Let's keep learning and making goods the both of us then !! Thank you so much !!

I love this in the most emo way, these vibes are just so nice.

This sounds so good! Didn't know Japanese math rock was a thing, but I'll have to pursue it if it sounds like this. This track sounds exceptionally well thought out, like the product of a full band who's absolutely dialed in to each other.

Oh yeah Japanese Math Rock is indeed a thing ! I love Toe for instance ! But they sound a whole lot better than me (they're sooooo good) ! Well at least they sound more math rock and less J-rock than me ! Especially live they're incredible.

Thank you so much for this kind comment ! I had a lot of help and it really wouldn't sound that good without my friends so I'm veeeery thankful about that.

This is really beautiful! Great guitar playing!

I get the vibe from the 3 songs you recommended that you like switching things up a lot, which I really like. Other than sounding very clean, all three tracks are so different. I wasn’t expecting this very homey, normal sounding guitar band type track. I don’t know how to use guitars like at all, so I am impressed by the quality of the sounds throughout. Its structure flows well. Cool track.
