Never Sleep Again...

By lament.config on October 20, 2024 11:28 am

It wasn't the plan to do the big 4 over Halloween but if I've already visited Michael and Bubba then it was only natural Freddy would be next.  While The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is (in my opinion) the greatest horror movies ever made, A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) would be my favorite, a warm blanket of a movie.

I wanted to create a sense of claustrophobia, trapped in a boiler room and the dread closing in.  To do this I used one of Elphnt's Max for Live devices, whereby I widened the first of the high pitched noises as wide as the device would allow then each of the subsequent noises were brought in closer and closer to the centre.  Those noises was an attempt to invoke the sound of Freddy scraping his knives across a pipe.  I also wanted to blow all the sounds out like they are in the film...but I think I went to far.

Made in Ableton...found in a furnace.

The narrowing of the stereo field on the high noises is really effective! I’m not sure I would have specifically noticed what it was if you hadn’t called it out, it’s subtle - but it definitely adds a sense of growing claustrophobia to the mix. Great mixing trick. Love the intensity of the boiler room ambience, and those last three piano notes? Chef’s kiss.

creepy! Especially with that piano at the end. Nice work!

Agree with SQF - the feeling of dread builds with the slow ambience, and those piano notes are just terrifying because of it.

A short scene, but very effective. Sound design on point, that metallic scraping effect is very convincing and yet musical. Intense but not overly abrasive.

seriously, y'all are FREAKING ME OUT
creepy as hell, and yeah - really cool reading about your approach to the mix!

Oh man.. the little piano quote at the end was SUPER Freddy... great atmosphere.  I think you got that claustrophobic energy and that "foggy" dream vibe that was so characteristic in the films.  Nicely done

Yep, definitely don’t listen during a full moon all alone with the power out track.

yup this got the few remaining hairs on my head standing yikes love the lil piano nod at the end.
