Feverish

By laguna on February 7, 2016 11:58 pm

This week I had another hardware project planned, but due to work schedule I ended unable to have those machines at my disposal, so I migrated to a different idea, using the great and still mostly unknown Ardour Linux DAW... However, last friday I got sick and wasn't able to do much music (or anything else for that matter) in a couple of days.

Finally I dug in my 2009 vaults and found an Ableton sketch full of all the wrong things from a producer standpoint BUT, lets not forget I was under some medication and a soft fever. Long story short, I made this weird piece which for some really strange reason sounded "folky" to me.

Not happy with it, I decided to dump the whole mix (really close to the deadline) and use it as a background for some creepy old tape effect. Little I knew then that my old cassette deck's motor wasn't playing at the proper speed, so when bounced back to Ableton everything was out of sync, and I had to warp the living s**t out of it (remaining just 25 minutes to the deadline).

So... warped up weird glitch song plus real wabbly tape bounces. Fever and a weird text from an ex girlfriend I have not seen in 3 years... Makes any sense? I guess not, but I should be sleeping and sweating anyway.

Promise to post a picture of my fucked up Celine Dion cassette used in this recording... NO KIDDING

Update: Here's the infamous wabbly-as-hell tape (picked up from a car so I guess it spent a few times under direct sunlight)

Slight touches to the mix and a more elaborate ending, sort of. I didn't want to overthink this one and lose the "hazy" feeling

So I guess I owe some inspiration to The Best Artist In the World herself smile

Sounds like a robot factory to me.  I cool robot factory.

THanks Edmund. I'm now taking my medicines and heading for the Valley of The Dolls. Hope to post a clearer mix, because I'm afraid this is a complete mess. SOmetimes the tape goes completely out of sync with everything. Glad you liked it, though

Really thick sound palette! Great job!

Sounds good to me too! I really need to get out of the box a bit more.

great track! huge sounds! love the drum programing!

...ahh..get well soon!

Excellent feverish robotic dub! Get well soon!

Sorry to hear about the sickness! Hope you're doing better today...but the result is really excellent: alien post-industrial ambient folk. Great stuff.

Yes, hope you feel better. But you know... sometimes the music just captures what's going on, and sometimes that's less pretty than other times. I would call this far out, but also enjoyable and well-produced (I think you just can't help it!)

Works for me!

Lo-fi gold. Sounds like you've maintained that 'strumming' sound to give it a folky vibe and hinged it together with an industrial arsenal of sounds. Absolutely love it.

Good work. Get well soon!

The scuzzy tape quality and the drum programming really go together here. The vibe sits in this weird zone in between chill and unnerving, if that even makes sense. Actually, being feverish might be like that XD

I really like the sound it takes once it hits that dubby tape effect.  I can't describe it too well apparently but it def has a strumming guitar sort of feel with all the crunchy beats bouncing off.  The down sampled bits I especially like.  Nice job!  I hope you're feeling better!

Those good wishes were really appreciated, guys. smile

Musically I've never thought it could sound industrial and/or dubby, but believe me I did this one in some kind of hazy state, so I was surprised myself about some of the twists and tricks I chose.

Thank you all for the positivity and I hope you have a wonderful week smile

BTW you can check the Soundcloud update, If you're interested. Better mix and a few touches here and there, plus a different ending

Man, as a cat person myself, you touched me with that cute GIF. Thanks for listening!

BTW do you know where did that anime cat came from? Any clues?

Soundcloud mix update posted, if you dig smile

Peace

Haha, thanks for the "just can't help it" part, Christian! Well, I agree with you, so when I posted an update to Soundcloud with some corrections here and there, I prefered to keep certain imperfections and don't mess with it too much. I know it's just a glitchy track of sorts but for me it brings memories of a really weird week that ended quite nicely (in a strange way). I really like your idea of WB as "musical journal" so apart from correcting big mistakes or simply misplaced levels, I think the feeling is still untouched.

Thanks for listening and commenting, man, as always. Take care

if you're interested, you can all have a listen to the updated Souncloud version.

I'm disabling downloads in Soundcloud for now and try to point my listeners to my future Bandcamp site. DOn't mind to give up music freely, but I don't like the way Soundcloud is evolving (into a "I follow if you follow" twitter style kinda place).

Any thoughts on the platform. I appreciate your vision on the matter

Woah, Lyons, thanks! I was surprised about the "industrial" quality, but I guess that's a good way to call it. The strumming bad played guitar is an actual recording of me playing back in '98, recorded through a crappy Zoom 505 fx pedal. Those where the first chords I learnt smile (kinda sentimental stuff I guess)

Thanks for listening, mate:)

I really like that "chill and unnerving" comparison. It is not really much of my merit but I guess that's what fever is all about and I think it shows.

Thanks smile

Thanks, Tone Matrix. As I explained to Lyons above, that strumming guitar was one of my first digital recordings back in the late nineties, so I somehow forced it over a layer of bitcruhed beats that were chopped afterwards into the mess you hear now.

Thanks for the positivity, man. Feeling much better now.

YES!

This turned out very nice, love the dubby effects, sounds like robots in the lab with lee scratch perry, getting a reggae/dub vibe from this

So awesome man! There's soooo much great talent on here! I keep finding gems and you are definitely one of them!! Keep it up!!!

You got a new follower on SoundCloud too! \m/

Perfect WB tune, no other music out there reflects what's going in our lives in quite the same way smile Nice crunch to those drums and you can't go wrong with source material like that...!

Woah.  That beat!!  Totally. Fuckin. Wild.  Track !!  I really like this

Like how quirky this one sounds, and enjoyed the overall mood a lot.

I absolutely love this track.

The beat is crazy, I like that. Cool Sounds.

I really dig this! and yes, I agree. it has a great folk texture to it. it has the surreal feel of a fever dream without the fever smile

Buenote!
