Clash and trash

This one's pretty weird, actually. It came to life because I was reorganizing my studio, making room for some records. I remembered I had some unwanted / discarded vinyl occupying precious space.

I've been sampling from a bunch of records from the late 90s and early 2000s. Mostly techno and a little bit of house. But these are not "my flavour" of the genre : these were hard house and relentless tribal techno. Mauro Picotto, Marco Bailey, Dave Clarke, Ben Simms and the like. They were on my personal limit of harshness, monotony and/or speed.

128 to 136 bpm stuff... Thump! thump! thump! thump!

They are mostly thift shop finds, bought in a lot for really little money, like 2 or 4 for one euro. Some had mismatched sleeves or white labels, so I didn't exactly knew what I was getting. I usually know many store managers and they give me extra special price if they want to clean the inventory. The stores I used to visit weren't in any trendy part of town, so not much demand for dj vinyl. I've found a lot of good stuff, but also lots of "meh" tracks and some real stinkers also.

However, getting rid of a record for me it's almost like thinking of burning books. So... I tried to make a track from all those records that are not really "my thing".

I think the track is really really disjointed. The break came from some early mediocre acid-housy track circa 88-91 and gave me something other than thundering drums and basslines. The "melody" ... well, it was a somewhat cool loop at... 138 beats per minute?

Maybe this one sounds a little bit awful, with lots of mids and crackle. I use one beat to modulate the next so I can "make room" in the mix... Is this trash? Does it sound absolutely disjointed?

Anyway... I ran out of time and my upload just went through within the last minute. Weeklybeats style smile

Have the best seven days you could possibly have, WB Family. See you next week !!!

Ah man I love when the song fully kicks in, something about this kind of progression (bass driven?) I really like... reminds me a bit of Kraftwerk Das Model or Georgio Moroder's Midnight Express OST if you know what I mean

ok the song wasn't loading properly and I just pressed enter TOO EARLY

Duuuuude that second part is killer!!!!! Definitely downloading this

i didnt understand where it was going with the drums only, but what a stark contrast. nice little break. adding to favs

love that break and the percussive elements dancing around it.  Cool effects that give me Ulrich Schnauss and the Orb feels. That change up midway has a trippy feel to it especially when it slows down.  Those slowed down hits sound so nice.

If Trash means Gold, then yes: This is Trash! big_smile
Good job on sampling many different records and still achieve a sweet sounding, cohesive track.

Reading the description, you sound like the second coming of Lemon Jelly. tongue  I love the soft sound of the breaks in the first sections; maybe the people who swear that vinyl makes things sound better are onto something.  But the bass groove in the section from around ~2:20 onward sounds like it's from the future!

Nice transformation of the source material. The character is really unique. The rest and the slow down at the end feel like very confident choices.

the sampled breaks are so good, this is nicely arranged heart love that rhythm in the part that starts at 2:22 ish !

Some great sampling, this has a really nice flavour to it, the imperfections is what makes it special.  I like that change up at 2:20, pays homage to some of the tribal techno records.  I absolutely understand the feeling of discarding a record, yet there is only so much space.  I also had quite a few of these records, I even tried giving them for free to a local records store, but they also weren't worth the space in the bin to them.  In the end I gave them away to Goodwill, probably somebody used them for some art piece to paint on or melt into a bowl.

Really smooth. Awesome sampling. I love all the tone shifts throughout. Also, holy moly the industrial beat coming out of left field around two minutes really sold me on this track. Dang, I wanna make something cool like this in the coming weeks.
