12 bit State of Mind

So, although this week's been still challenging personally, I managed to find a second hand Boss SP-505. It's a wonderfully limited and sometimes slow machine that takes minutes to make what you could achieve in Ableton in seconds but... It has something, at least for me.

So I pretend to be Pete Rock for a few hours, mashing pads and staring at a tiny black and green LCD smile

I found some anonymous samples inside from the previous owner, so I proceed to destroy them in the best abstract hip hop way I was capable, hoping Dj Krush would be proud... No UNDO, remember ? wink

Maybe some of you think it's some sort of hardware snobbism but, working with some technology which some will surely label as obsolete, I'm forcing myself to be focused and rethink my workflow.

No undo. Just on effect at a time. Will take 25 seconds to map a sample chromatically. Quite limited indeed. I had to do my best BEFORE I reach for my DAW.

That being said... some dope after mastering in Ableton Suite 9. Just not ready to give up some pleasures yet

Respect to my college year heros: Shadow, Cam, Krush, Vadim, Spooky

Hope you enjoy this tiny boom bap. Just 8 weeks to go... Unbelievable!!!

Nice find!

Gorgeous grainy sounds, and the beats are fantastic.  Well done!

definitely sounding big! did you record the patterns on the internal sequencer? sounds great!

You really worked those limitations to good ends. Well done, sir!

Thanks! It's nice when you find a cheap, good condition device that was ignored by its previous owner. Box is limited, but also has an almost hypnotic workflow... Really good to both escape and appreciate the computer at the same time smile

Thanks, Onezero. I used some manual cheap delay feedback along with Max For Live's Diffuse... I think you would approve wink

Would be nice to meet in one of those Pedal Exchanges and talk production. Shame there's nothing like that around here

Yes, I did! I was surprised the internal sequencer, while unconfortable at first, turned to be a great powerful tool. Everythink is described as text in the form "Event: bar 1.2.4 Pad 12 Velocity 98 Gate 32"... It's pretty straightforward and turning the quantization ON and OFF you could achieve some nice J-Dilla-esque beats. Basically it's limited, but quite editable, with and excellent workflow.

There are usually lots of SP-303 and 404s around the second hand market. If you find it cheap I think you could have lots of fun with it smile

Wielen Danke, mein Freund!

That's quite a compliment coming from you, Sir. Although we are sometimes in diffent music territories, I admire the boldness of your sonic explorations. Really appreciated

`Cool stuff, laguna! I love the idea of using an older piece of gear and letting the limitations inspire you. Nice!

Thanks man! I guess I need to move further and not fall into the same tricks over and over, specially considering the high level of musicianship displayed here in Weeklybeats.

This machine is far for magical, but the lack of possibilities gives small moments of "what if I...". Sometimes working so fast in a software project and knowing all the nuances of your tool helps getting productive and efficient, but not inspired smile

Wow, I bought one of these second hand about 8 years ago, these days it is almost never in use.
I am very impressed how you managed to work it's limitations to your advantage! Great track!
