(You Cannot Stop The Waves But You Can) Learn to Surf!

By Kedbreak136 on June 2, 2024 5:10 am

I read this line in a meditation book - You cannot stop the waves but you can learn to surf. It's just perfect and apparently it was from an Indian Buddhist monk. I do not know him but I'm sure i'd love to have a drink with him.

So of course throat singing, in Tibetan style, going full Orientalist! And while i'm at it, if we're talking about surfing, I had to go full into surf guitar! Added some voices with AI and some singing with vocaloid. Ah yeah also some JS Bach inspired Rhodes solo because it was necessary.

And really stupid lyrics, that was necessary. I had fun, it's a silly track but it also resonated deeply with me. I think I needed a silly laugh.

*Update a couple of hours after posting the track*
Ok i just realized i think it sounds kinda similar to the batman 60s series music and the surfaris' wipeout. Could be worse, could be better.

Surf rock tracks are super fun to do and to listen to!

I'll need to do one again in 2024!

This one rocks hard! Le solo d'orgue est vraiment le fun.

This rocks!  Hanging ten

Silly laughs are always appreciated and this brings the surf rock vibe hard.  Every once in a while surf rock just really hits the spot.

I had my seatbelt on, because of the speed you had in here. Prepared for something unsane to happen. But the maneuver was well done. No accident, no mistake. Everything solved in perfection.

This is a super fun listen.  The energetic drums with the surf guitar is so catchy.  Oh yais on that bach-like solo!  The drums are addictive and had me tapping along for the wipin' out wipe out vibes. smile  Also love that quote. *saved*

great intro! love the prechorus vocal melody. As fun to listen to as it was to make I'm sure

LOVE this movie!
so great to see you on the call, btw

EPIC LYRICS:
I just gulped a jellyfish, does that count as protein?
Please just get me out of there, i'll tag you on my facebook

lol so good

btw this is not that close to batman or wipeout, don't sweat it

ohhhhhhh man what a hammer.  Love how in your fact the mix is, and the keys solo at 2:20 rips.  What a jam.

I find the claim an Indian Buddhist monk would have an opinion on surfing somewhat dubious, but hey, if it works
Love the intro tho, such a great setup for the greatness afterwards

Perfect surf rock party. I'm putting my trunks on now and strapping the board to my ride. In 6 hours I'll be at the ocean. Better watch out for jellyfish though. Great lyrics, a good reminder that there's some rough stuff, gotta learn to surf to get through like the monk said. Monks always have the good lines. I'd have a drink with that monk too. Let's set that up. We'll tag them on facebook. I like the story about the hippies who wanted to drop acid with the monk (I think this was a Ram Das story) and the monk took a heroic dose and was like, I don't feel anything, ya'll are silly.
Love the vocals, cool use of ai and vocaloid. The guitar of course wins the day. I love how your tracks have some extra natural sounds too, like the waves here, set that scene!

Way to nail the surf rock vibe! big_smile Had fun with the cheeky lyrics too.

love the guitars, great rhythm and sound, perfectly nails the surf vibe

oh god the silly AI voice
it's so uncanny it's borderline hard to hear hahah
cool heavy surf vibe
cute piano solo at ~2min!

nananana nananana batsurf

I like it!

Right? There is something about surf rock that hits some nostalgic spot, and takes me back right to childhood (ok I was not born when surf rock was prominent but my dad used to listen a lot to the Shadows etc).

Thank you very much! I am glad you joined us on this journey, a bit of a wild one, but perfectly safe. smile

I am glad you appreciated the jellyfish one. I sometimes use an app to track protein intake etc and that is a kind of question i would have if i did gulp a jellyfish by accident.

I am amortizing the investment in thousands of samples bought on splice, trying to reuse them as much as possible. I love the sound of the ocean and of waves, it always takes me to places. Let's tag and find that monk and drop some acid into his drink to stress test your story!

I have always struggled with Vocaloid, it's not a great interface. Chrisfoo introduced me to Synthesizer V recently and I think that it might be a great tool to make singing! Hopefully in near future tracks.

Haha, ridiculous but very fun indeed.  Wacky AI vocals and all.  Definitely a fun and kooky ride.
