The Hour of the Tiger

By Kedbreak136 on December 13, 2020 2:34 am

The Hour of the Tiger corresponds in eastern Asian cultures to this deadzone of 3am to 5am. Living in Tokyo, trains stop running from about 1am and restart only around 5am. It means that if you go clubbing, you are committing to be out there until 5am. Usually 4am onwards corresponds to being burnt out on a sofa or the side of the pool in ageha club.

The hour of the tiger is therefore this weird hour between the madness of the night and dawn, a mix of exhaustion, nostalgia as you know the better part of the night is over but also relief to some extent as it was a great time and you're looking forward to some rest. This is a bit of metaphor also for being close to then end of this year of weekly beats 2020.

The evolution of this track is very strange but I enjoyed the journey a lot. It started like a funk version of the theme for Curious George. And it also kinda reminded me of the Revolution track I had done a few weeks ago, to the point of self-plagiarism. Instead of scratching the track for that reason, I decided that embracing self-plagiarism was the best course of action and decided to add a lot of samples I used on tracks over this weekly beat year. Then I did some editing, and removed so much that actually the backbone of the original curious george funk track is barely there anymore. The guzheng, which can be heard on Hour of the Rat track from the middle of the year, decided to commandeer the track and take it somewhere else. And this is how we ended on this final product, the Hour of the Tiger.

Love all the different elements in this track, man. It's like you commandeered nostalgia and made it spit out something new and original. Was really bopping my head to this one the whole way.

If you're going to plagiarize from anyone it may as well be yourself.  This actually has some really fantastic energy to it.  I almost feel a little more fired up listening to it than exhausted, but I suppose if I was going at this level all night I probably would get pretty tired.

This track is epic!!! Really nice work dude, love the brass smile

I really enjoy the drums. I'm also getting fired up from this, electric guitar and trumpet is a surprisingly great combo.

I like this! Was cool to read about the hour of the tiger. Been a long time since been clubbing like that for me! This energy seems to fit those hours and energy well. Samples great. Love the horns, bongos, lots of little treats here. I find starting with some sound I've used in past tracks is good place to start, don't have to think too hard about sounds.

Drums are brilliant on this, great blend of sounds with the nice Asian touch, never heard about the hour of the tiger, thanks for the explanation, I would call it the hour of Sohil (that’s my son), he likes to come into my bed and wake me up at 3:00 am and then I never fall back asleep.

At my work in the medical emergency ambulance these hours are mainly reserved for cases which come straight and intoxed from their parties or from the street. This could be a perfect soundtrack for a documentation of someone beeing imported into our hospital.
The many different instruments and levels of intensities you play here is awesome. Great beats, cool stuff.

WHAT A TUNE! When the trumpet came in half way through smile smile And the evolutions toward the end are really great too

Fantastic track! Enjoyed every element of it.

Action packed soundtrack material here!  So much drive and the vocal is full of intrigue. Love the way this keeps building. Great blending of so many instruments and styles from muted brass to power rock guitar. Quite epic. This is one of your best!

Nice choice of drum loop. Very punchy, energic. Très cool track.

I love this mega epic thread you've been on!  I love this story about the hour of the tiger.  That accurately describes my post-show ritual of staying up super late, watching a movie, eating a bunch of food at 4am smile

Love that note bending koto kind of thing.  These DRUMS - the china cymbal - THE BREAK - THE MEGA EPIC GUITAR

I really want to watch this movie now!

The western equivalent of that is the Witching Hour. Honestly, this song feels like a fusion of both those terms and it sounds amazing.

Love the big beat feel of this and how the melody jumps from one instrument to the next.  The trumpet gives it a nice "nightlife" feel where the rock guitar gives it that "party" feel.  The steps at the end complete this awesome cinematic journey.  Well done!
