Shishidoshi Bloodbath

By Kedbreak136 on October 11, 2020 11:45 am

Shishidoshi is the bamboo water fountain in Japan where an hollow bamboo stick fills in with water, and then drops, releasing the water in a nice wood block sound that is very characteristic.

I started the week with two things - riffs for a skate punk track and for some reason an idea of doing a samurai fighting track. Maybe inspired by Quentin Tarantino? And for some reason the two ideas merged, and now it's more like a punk samurai fight track and little skate in there (especially with the gravel, have you tried skating in gravel?).

And then Eddie died, which came as a shock - he was still young and had changed so much the field of music. I wanted to put something about Eddie in there but I can't play guitar like that so I went with programming a tapping version of shamisen as a wink to a passed guitar god.

So here we are with a samurai punk track with shamisen shredding and appropriately, lots of lots of bloods and cut members (thanks again to Splice). Enjoy.

Eddie's passing was a surprise to me, especially because I found out a few days later. He was the first guitarist I respected for his skill. His licks were intense and skilled, though he played them while relaxing with a cigarette in hand.
Great track. The ripping Shamus en was pretty dope. Great progression of sounds in this audio story (?)/.

Firsty, love your nod to Eddie. Also love the mix of vocal samples with your instrumental pieces. Everything fits really nicely, and the intro does a really good job of subtly introducing the elements (traditional, ominous, distorted.)

Cool song! I enjoy how you make a film scene to the music. Always fun to listen smile

A good an unexpected blend of genres.  I thought it was going to be a peaceful meditative sort of thing at first and then the fighting most definitely broke out.  Interestingly I can hear the Eddie tribute in there as well.  It's there in spirit for sure.

I like how the spatial setup of all the sonic elements makes this track very narrating. My favourite part is when the banjo and the bass guitar come together. Well done!

That's one intense fight.

I can really enjoy this composition. The ballance of guitarriffs, bass, drums and clever samples is just right. I can focus on every single element and not loosing the overview. The mix is great and perfect in stereo. I always wanted to have such drums in one of my songs, but I never came to that point. Maybe I go for this challange soon. Thank you for the reminder and inspiration.

AFter that peaceful zen intro, the electric guitar caught me by surpoise but makes this so much of a tougher fight. Bring it on! Nice fightting sounds too.

Hehe, love the sfx in this one. Nice work!

Dayummmmmm this is so sick, especially when the vocals came in near the end

Nice!  This sounds so good, never would have guessed all these different sound pallets would work together so well, like the part where the samurai is catching his breath before the last showdown

Cooool, people mixing things from completely different areas is one of the best things about modern internet music. This one really works!

Love the meld of styles and instruments.  A bit of Secret Chiefs 3 vibe.  Nice one!

very fun. makes me want to watch kill bill

this would very much work for an updated soundtrack to "wheels on meals"

Bad ass combination of styles!  Your samurai skate punk skills are strong. Love the fighting sequences and the primal punk drums.  Awesome!

Sweet dude, love the asian trash skater samurai blend you've got going on here.  Super cool and unique sound.  Digging all the stabbing too.  Not sure why.

WHERE DID THIS COME FROM!? so rad!

Thank you! Eddie's impact on music will continue for decades! But we'll sure miss his boyish grin and alient playing. Though I have heard he got a vault a bit like Prince - we might get new material for years! I would not mind. smile

Thank you! Eddie on a shamisen!

Yes that's right the shamisen actually sounds very banjo like now that you mention it. I got lucky on that specific shamisen sample, the melody is really cool.

I am glad you also enjoyed the drums. I struggled with them a lot, using a combination of samples and independent kicks to give a little more oomph. I have been using this Splice sample pack called "Desert", which has the most awesome drum sound for stoner rock but it can be applied to a lot of tracks that need drums that have dust, dirt and character.

Cool, I was really not so sure about them in the end, i thought it might sound a bit cheesy but it kinda works I guess.

Wow thanks a lot, big Secret Chiefs 3 fan here so I really appreciate this comment.

Maybe playing all these Samurai Shodown/Last Blade games?

From random idea associations and going all the way down the rabbit hole with samples. smile Thank you for listening!

Love the big taiko drum feel this has.  Super visual inducing with the sfx throughout.  I too wanted to try and tribute Eddie ala "Cathedral" but I realized it was way out of my league.  His tracks always were a huge influence as a kid for me.  This was a super fun track to listen to.  Those vocals towards the end fit in perfect too.

never knew what a a shishidoshi was called until now - thank you!  also RIP Eddie, what an incredible guitarist.

now I need to play Ninja Gaiden and Wipeout at the same time??
