Peg Leg Jig

By Kedbreak136 on September 13, 2020 9:19 am

I am continuing with the theme of the sea but this week with some pirate action. I had this 3/4 riff in my head, I thought it sounded pirate-ish (or is that an Irish traditional song?) so went and did a whole 3/4 pirate piece. This is somewhere between Monkey Island and Pirates of Carribean, though the bass is more synthwavy than anything.

All samples are from Splice (they have a whole package of Pirate talking!) and FLEX for the bass, winds and strings.

I love that "release the kraken" interlude.

Very fun track. Cheezy on a good way. I really like the bass. the "cannon shots" are very fun too.

Gotta love the pirate theme.  This definitely brings the vibe.  Speaking of which, what's a pirate's favorite part of music?  The hARRRRRRR-mony.

Fun! I like your sound effects to make it as a movie scene.

Hell yeah man, pirate music and synth bass is a winning combo.

LOL that Kraken was awesome. Nice work on this one!

ARRRRRRR.. yo ho hoooooo

yeah the bass plus synth string is really cool.  I can't believe there is a Pirate Talk sample pack, I need to get it - but we all know that these aren't samples, this is your actual voice.

I love the track and I love the gif!  I really want to go to a Kedbreak136 show one day and see this performed live with actual cannons.  Then at the end, the audience is screaming PEG-LEG-JIG!  PEG-LEG-JIG!

Beat switch at 2:42 is sick.

favorited and downloaded!

hahah best pirate track on weeklybeats to date!

It doesn't sound like 3/4, but it does sound like Mr. Krabs is being a badass pirate with an amazing theme song.

I am discovering the tonal quality of cannons and think all tracks could be embellished with appropriate cannon samples.

It's a bit like an 80s version of Pirate track. Which kinda reminds me of Ladyhawke, a very cool 80s movie in a setting similar to Willow or Lord of the rings but the music is disco! The result of this combination is not necessarily a very happy one.

That triggered me checking a lot of videos on time signatures. smile This is full of triplets, but you are right that it does not have the feel of a 3/4, which should be more like waltz I suppose? This sounds more like a jig, which the internet tells me is actually typically in 6/8, kinda similar to 3/4 but different feel? I would definitely welcome more educated information on that specific topic, I know little of music theory.

If Wikipedia is to be believed, an actual jig and most of the variants are 12/8 or 6/8. What you got here is closer to a Reel, especially with the accents on the first and third. However, since they're dotted, it's not an actual Reel. Maybe a Fling, but my Celtic folk isn't really my forte.

A fine peg leg jig if I've ever heard one. Only very few are able to master this fine jig, as peg legs are scarcer these days. That Kraken ... fun times. Jolly good times this was. You found and created some great piratey sounds here.

Haha glad I wasn't the only one getting Mr. Crabs on da mic feels.  Nice use of all the samples and the synth line def tied together the whole pirate theme.
