Dark Forest

By Kedbreak136 on August 18, 2024 5:52 am

I got Covid, was just lying in bed with fever for the end of the week, which gave me an opportunity to finally watch the Three Body Problem series. So here you go, Cosmic Horror.

Amazing soundscape and atmosphere.  Truly mesmerizing ambient - i got sucked in to the Dark Forest and emerged six minutes later as a Dark Elf.

Hope you feel better soon. heart Way to hone in on a stellar, creepy tone with this one!

sufficiently creeped out over here!
hope you feel better quickly and have a 100% return to good health

I haven't seen the show yet, but loved the books.  This fits well with the scary concept of the dark forest as described in them.  Space as a scary, dangerous place full of predators stalking you.  Thoroughly terrifying.

really cool sounds! excited to hear this different vibe than your usual cinematic type track. very nice and cinematic in a different way - def can feel the dark influence of both the series and the sickness. also, get well and best wishes!
I love the tiny glitchy things in the ending.

Great soundscape, really putting those minor second intervals to work!  I love the sense of rising dread that the noisy wash (that first come in around 1:17) creates.  It really feels like an ancient evil breathing in the darkness.  The creepy little plucks panned to the right side starting around 3:00, REALLY nice touch... very unsettling.

Sorry to hear about your illness! I'm leaving Japan in a few days. Thanks for reaching out, I'd love to meet but I have my family in tow + a rather tight schedule this time around. And now it seems we wouldn't be able to meet either way!

In any case, good mysterious track. I appreciate the long build, it's in no hurry, which allows it to build an immersive atmosphere.

Oof feeling immediate goosebumps with that opening.  The darker bass pad sounds wicked when it comes in underneath the higher tones.  Like something is slowly exhaling over those lower pads.  The melody gives you that "something ain't right" feeling yikes  a hallucination, a figment.  The lil glitchy siren effect really increases that feeling too.  I hope you're feeling better asap and have a better week ahead.

Thank you for the nice comment! Be careful with the nameless creatures that lurk in the dark forest!

People who read the books (I am now reading Dark Forest) have diverse opinions about the show, but personally I loved it. I felt it was much more grounded in personal experience with character that have a few more dimensions, and felt like an adaptation with a lot of liberties while keeping the most important plot points. And they do a great job at conveying the sense of scale. Some of their choices I think were really great improvements. I recommend checking the serie.

Great that this track captured the eery and dangerous atmosphere of the dark forest!

Thank you! I have dabbled in a few darker ambient tracks this year, at the risk of getting a bit formulaic. I have been enjoying the flow of making these though, as it's more jam and improvisational. Thank you for noticing the weird electronic glitch layer. smile

Ah thank you for the comment and for noticing the little plucks! It took some time on trying to mix them well so that they become accents to give some dimension, scale, but do not give a sense of melody. Ancient evil thing breathing in the darkness - that is it!

I hope you enjoyed your stay in Japan (apart from the brutal heat)! Yes to the long build - this is such a counterintuitive thing for me to do as i'm always more like "riff A, now riff B, bridge, back to riff A". But that's refreshing and helpful to create new tracks.

Thank you for your nice comment! "Something ain't right" - that sounds like a perfect description for the Dark Forest. Maybe it's better to try to stay quiet! smile

Totally nailed the feel of this one, title fits perfectly, in my mind I imagine coming across an abandoned rotting ship in space, as you enter the ship there is an erie feeling of deja vu, you have been here before, wait this is your ship but it is from 300 years in the future, what? how? is someone watching me?

Hope you have a quick recovery, I got covid a couple months ago, wasn't too bad but the cough lingered for almost 6-7 weeks.

Really love the minimalism of this track.  Super enjoyable!  Hope you're feeling better and I'll have a peek at that series.  smile

hoping you get lost of rest & feel well soon!

Hope you feel better now after having Covid. This is a hazy mysterious quiet little scary soundtrack. Well done.

nooooo sorry you got covid, can't believe it's probably here forever?  blah

the alarm at 3:44 is really good.  makes me think of some of the trailers for NIN Year Zero with "the presence"
