A Radical Act of Love

By Kedbreak136 on May 5, 2024 11:50 am

I was listening to Rick Rubin's Tetragrammaton podcast, where he discussed with one of the first voices and leading voice of meditation in western societies - Jon Kabat-Zinn. Jon was a MIT researcher and lead the first investigations into meditation in the second half of the 20th century. He's now in his 80s and is still practicing. He described his meditative practices, his sitting, as a "radical act of love". Love of the present, cherishing the moment.

I found this statement so powerful. And I want to believe that I sit in to make a weekly beat, this is also a radical act of love. Of cherishing that moment, making it transcendent.

If you're curious, you can check the video here:

I treated myself with some Koto libraries for Kontakt. They are extremely detailed, where it's possible to control the types of attacks and even the fingers used to attack! I wanted to do an exploration using this library and this week's track is very much that.

Dude the koto is so rad. You have blown me away here. So much with that one element. Super dreamy, super airy. Favorited

Nice classical music. Thanks for the link.

this is awesome!  more KOTO

As a radical act of love, of the present, cherishing the moment, I'll leave a short comment:

Nice.

I've always been intrigued by meditation, but have a difficult time sitting still and focusing only on breathing.  I do agree music creation seems somewhat akin to meditation though as you can really get into the zone and lose track of time.  I agree the koto sounds great and it seems to work equally well playing lead lines or creating rhythmic patterns.

This is great, yes to KOTO such an awesome instrument. Very expressive here, your melody is nice. Thank you for your act of love. I agree, creating art is a radical act of love. Life is better when have these acts of love. So cool to think of meditation like that too. I go in and out of meditation practice, have not developed the steady habit, but thankful for the moments I do have. Thankful for music, yours and all here on WB too. What a loving crew.

I believe I heard part of this interview, I checked out the section where he ran through a meditation.  Really enjoyed that.  The Koto def has a meditative quality to it especially when it's alone and setting the mood to the track. Well done! KOTO +1!!

Great sounds throughout.  Love the cello mixed with the koto and agreed re: WB.  It's definitely like a form of meditation practice.  Forces you to be in the present on a regular basis.

Thanks for being a regular listener/commenter too even if I've been too flat-out to reply some weeks.  The doco score is nearing the end.  Deadline is the end of this month.  Really appreciated.

nice full sound, that cello is such a great touch.

Ooh, those vocals at the end are my kind of vibe. The koto is noteworthy as well, yes. Sounds great!

Did you know Rick Rubin's book was ghost-written by Neil Strauss (who wrote "The Game" about becoming a pickup artist)?

Considering how expensive that package was, I'll definitely be using it more to amortize the cost! smile

Having difficulty with meditation is the very essence of meditation. When you catch yourself thinking of something else and you come back to the breath - this is actually a success! A bit like weekly beats, it's all about the long term.

Koto is awesome! I love the sounds we can get out of it. I'll need to spend way more time with the library.

Best of luck to complete the doco score! And don't worry about lack of replies! smile

Ah the vocals would be from Pharlight (or is that Straylight? I always mix these 2 kontakt libraries up). I did not know Neil Strauss did the ghost-writing of that book. Even though Strauss got originally famous for The Game, I think he demonstrated he's a really talented writer with other books. I have this memory of it, could be wrong. I enjoyed Rick Rubin/Straus book very much.

- do you meditate regularly?

- what was the actual Koto library pack?  just curious to look it up, not that i even know how to use a sound library

- have you ever gotten a chance to play a real one?  the moveable bridges look so crazy.

- how is your day going?
