you know they might try to injure sammie
he said "you're mad that they killed me"
they all applaud while he's making money
it all plays out on the tv screen
and oh my, no one survived
the heads were set in motion
and oh right, we smoke through the night
crying through songs of devotion
you know they might try to injure sammie
you know he's building the end times
they tore his shed down and stole his bike chain
it all plays out on the big screen
and oh my, no one survived
the heads were set in motion
and oh right, we smoke through the night
crying through songs of devotion
thank you to the law offices of Emily, Napear & Neon for the notes and mix feedback this week.
and thank you for listening!
I feel like we must save Sammie at all costs but also fear him and his nefarious but largely harmless plans for the end of the world.
This was just delightful. Sitting in the circle with you around the fire, smoking the night away, singin' and clappin' and snappin' and knee-slappin'.

This is so good. The vocal harmonies add such magic. It's really hard for me to pick out single things I like about this cause it's all so fucking good.
This is really excellent. Favorited.

They stole his bike chain but not his bike? That's just cruel! lol This is such a feel good, sing-along song with soothing vocal harmonies. I just want to keep playing it.... it's that good.

The unsettling lyrics juxtaposed with the laidback music remind me of "lounge metal", in particular a group called Hellsongs and their cover of Metallica's "Blackened".
I read "Sammie" as "Uncle Sam", i.e. "the USA". The lyrics talk about how the media sells you fear, and religion plays into that, with evangelical policies literally planning for the end times.
Or maybe Sammie was just an über-fan of Depeche Mode.

Wow. Instrumentation is great, but the vocals steal the show here. Fantastic layering and harmonies. Transported to late-60s/early 70s folk pop like Simon and Garfunkel or Seals and Crofts. Agree that it’s at the same time comforting and somewhat unsettling. This is a track that requires repeated listening to dig into it. Absolutely beautifully done, this is top tier stuff.

Fantastic work! The percussion fits in so perfectly, really all the parts feel like they're right where they belong. The choruses are stellar too, the vocals and bass give such an uplifting feeling. Dang the rhythm change at 2:47 and the turnaround to repeat the last line just nailed the ending too. Kudos to the legal team on this one.

Wow, another I can’t believe im hearing on weekly beats. The intro hook that builds just pulls in so nicely to get us in. Lead guitar at bridge works really well. Reminded of The Shins a little.
Great job 👏

wow, it did my heart good to read your generous comments and know that y'all were listening this week. i'll respond more specifically below, but just a quick note up here as a few of you asked about Sammie.
*this song isn't an ode to a sandwich, but i did have an incredible sandwich last week that probably deserves a song. you can see a pic & read the description here on IG if interested. it was SO GOOD.

› about Sammie
‹ about Sammie
i've served in different roles for the past 22+ years with an org that provides supports for people with disabilities. Sammie was one of our clients back when i was in a 'direct support professional' role, but he also became a friend (that line between client/friend has often been blurry to me, although i've done my best to have appropriate boundaries). when i first started working at Sammie's apartment, i was excited to find out that he also played guitar and was very into music. he had an incredible voice — imagine a bell-like twang, somewhere in the Hank Williams Sr. / Stonewall Jackson world — and had a great feel for country shuffles on his beat-up acoustic. he also liked to point out things he could do on guitar that i couldn't do
Sammie introduced me to several old country gems, but also had a few song that he wrote that in my opinion stood up to a lot of the classics. a couple times early on i offered to help Sammie record his music, but unfortunately that idea trigged some deep paranoia (those ideas inspired a lot of the lyrics for my Sammie song) so i let it go and just enjoyed the times that i got to hear and even play and sing along with Sammie. it is a shame that those songs aren't documented though.
Sammie passed on in 2019, but i'm really grateful for the times we had together and everything he taught me. it was nice to reminisce a bit while working on this song and i hope it is a fitting tribute.

like... how do i respond to that! haha
and yeah, at fist i was like... is it too played out to go to the triplet on that last "smoke through the night" but i just HAD TO.

awesome! and yeah, Sammie could be spacey and liked to collect things so he would often lose track of things like bike chains or padlocks or electronic parts. unfortunately he would also assume that when something was missing that it was because someone stole it. there was a particular neighbor that Sammie was always suspecting.

thanks, Cursory! it was fun recording the percussion. the main beat was me tapping on the edge of my computer keyboard and desk. i was trying to figure out what to use and then had a moment where i was like "hey that sounds cool, just put a mic up and go with it." i did add a couple tracks of this wooden bongo box thing that my buddy built for me. oh and finger snaps, gotta have the snaps.
