for the Jeffs

› lyrics

thanks for the kind feedback last week. i decided to continue with another fairly minimal live arrangement — this one with my Century Guitars 'Clydesdale' aluminum neck electric & a vocal. this recording is: vocal mic + mic on the Music Man amp + DI of the guitar which i used to add a little texture & some lower freqs in the mix.

i look forward to hearing what everyone has been working on as we head into the final quarter of the year!

This triggered a memory (which is always significant when you have dissociative amnesia like me) - warm summer night, the breeze is hot and humid, like it breathes on your skin, scent of damp soil and ash from the bonfire, smoke from weed and cigarettes (that I wasn't smoking), beer I wasn't drinking, that strange aura around a bonfire that lights a ring of branches above and encircles everything else in the darkest black, voices somewhere beyond the fire's edge, twang of a guitar playing from up near the house, which I can't see save a few tiny floating squares of light where the windows are.

It was Neil Young's Harvest Moon, but now when I recall that memory, I hear your song in my head instead.

This was really beautiful and quite powerful for me, there's something in that guitar, your voice, that digs up memory and feeling from some of the deepest, long-buried parts of my brain.

Wonderful. heart

The quiet introspective and minimalistic folk guitar here really reminds me of people like Jeff Buckley and Elliot Smith. The song is super pretty, great work. I'm so impressed with how much can get expressed with so few elements. And even those few elements are used super sparingly. Super impressive.

Man that guitar has great tone to it.  And I love the little bit of trem too, suites the intimate, minimal vibe perfectly.

This is a really lovely song - getting flavors of Band of Horses. Your mix methods are great - little instrumentation, but in no way lacking in texture. The mix is clean and full. In awe of your voice.

I'm loving your experiments in minimal recording - it's really inspiring.

Dear jwh, this is another heartmelting solo performance, in the singer songwriter tradition, that I love so much.
I remember your guitar from earlier tracks. It has a fantastic sound. Supercool video too.

really cool how big the guitar sounds in the chorus sections compared to the verse. Quite the dynamic range and emotional impact. Love the lyrics too, definitely got some fuck capitalism vibes, viewing art while being fed an ad about steaks lol. Another heartfelt minimalist tune, love your stuff man!

So lovely smile Absolutely crushing these live recordings. I really like the upwards melody of the vocals/guitar in unison. You're utilizing this bright/twangy tone so well, it's quite a task to use this kind of sound as gently as you do, but then it also totally rips in the loud parts.

Also... is the wa-wa-wonder a Runaway reference??

The imagery in this just so heartfelt and emotional damn.  **looks for tissues, clears throat**
The arrow/heart and the what could i say lines oof!  Really enjoying these live in the room feels again.  The mix sounds awesome and i love those chords on "your flesh and blood..." Beautiful combo of between you and the guitar and those lyrics.  Fav'd n sav'd.

You're getting really great results from these minimalist live performances.  You're sound is dialed in and both guitar and vocals have a warm and pleasing tone to them.  The wa wa wa wa wondered line works great, too.  It sort of jumped out at me when I just sort of initially scanned the lyrics and I wa wa wa wa wondered how it would play out in the song and the answer was "just right."

Great song! I only know 1/3 of those Jeffs... but the Jeffs I do know would be seething to think of it too.

So beautiful. I really like those shifts in the tempo with singing some words together with the guitar notes, there's a calm but also melancholy energy that I really appreciate

good vibes from this song, although its a little slow for a daily listen for me, this song is so powerful in that quite way that i just love to hear.

True expert at your craft, vocals and guitar are on point as always, can barely cobble together a few loops each week, no idea how you come up with all these lyrics each week, glad we get to enjoy them.

I enjoyed this a lot, it's perfect for the current weather here

Your lyrics are always so personal and inspired. Great execution as always.

Joining the club, these last two songs were really nice & soft!  Also neat that you were shining for half a second as you were stepping away. smile

this is a really beautiful track. the playing and singing are so expressive. i really dig the lo-fi production. i makes me want to lock myself in a room with a guitar and a 4 track for a year and see what happens. congrats on this track!

Mmmm tremolo, really like the stripped back nature of this track. Live performance is my whale, and you make it seem so easy. capturing such a great performance in a week is so awesome. Week after week, such a  fan, thank you for joining the wb community, let’s goooo!

The tremolo sways in harmony with the gentle light pouring in through the window. The gentle singing voice that emerges from it makes you feel like you're watching a movie.

Lovely and tender. Lyrics allude to things, but leave room for us to wa wa wonder about the stories here. That guitar so bright and crisp, sounds great, tremolo is swell as well.

Do you notice any difference between aluminum necks and wooden necks? I guess the metal one is cold, but I mean a difference in performance.

This looks like you recorded what's on video directly? That's very impressive. The way your vocals are clean, pitch-perfect at low volume, and yet so emotive... man, you're playing the guitar at the same time. This is pro-level shit.

"we buried things on top of it. was it wrong?" reminds me in a twisted way of a line from Destroyer's "Poor In Love" (highly recommended) where he sings "Why does everybody sing along when we built this city on ruins?"

That aluminum neck really does add some brightness to it. That, and this song are both really cool. You're a cool guy jwh.

finally catching up on these Week 40 replies! where does the time go??

i know we've talked off WB, but just wanted to say again how much this comment means to me. like i can't even begin to put it in words.
just... thank you
*also, Harvest Moon is such an important song to me.
a good friend lost his dad, Charlie, several years ago. Charlie was an incredible guy, and his wake was a true celebration. just an honor to be there and experience and witness it all. at one point someone starting playing Harvest Moon on guitar and we all sang it... i was levitating. i think we all were.

thanks, Cursory! i couldn't stop singing that upwards melody (ask emily, who had to listen to me shuffle around the kitchen repeatedly singing "we buried things on top of it" all week haha).
and yes, that is 100% a reference to Del Shannon's 'Runaway!' that song is an all-timer for me. i learned to play it years ago and i've got some great memories of playing and singing it with my family  smile

one of the Jeff's is a chef (Jeff the Chef haha [plz don't tell him i said that]), and when all those social media short cooking videos started coming out with everyone wearing those black disposable gloves he would get SO MAD about them. whenever i would see them pop up there would be a comment from him like "WHY ARE YOU WEARING THOSE STUPID F***ING GLOVES?"  ahhhh i love that grump so much  smile
thank you!

i def like to leave lyrics open enough that people can wonder about, so thank you for noticing. i'm feeling really seen/heard, and that's good for my heart.  smile

thanks so much, rplktr! and yeah, the video was of the actual live/ recorded performance. appreciate the kind words.

that Destroyer song is great. i got really into a couple of his early albums, but didn't keep up over the years. i'll have to dip back in.

re: the guitar - this has a rosewood fretboard, so it feels a lot more like the guitars i'm used to and not as cold as the couple all aluminum neck guitars that i've played in the past. the main differences i notice are the sustain (insert Spinal Tap reference here) and the articulation and frequency response. no matter where on the neck i'm playing, i feel like the notes ring out really clearly.

i was never really that interested in aluminum guitars before (some of my buddies swear by them, we call them the aluminati haha), but when my friend Chris started posting pictures and talking about his process when making this one... i couldn't stop thinking about it. i had been wanting a Mustang, so this caught my eye right away. i also really love the P-94 style pickups he used.
ok, i better stop rambling about the guitar!

well that's a very nice thing to say, BarristerPlong. i don't often feel cool, but i'm heading into the weekend with my SHADES ON  heart

Aluminum neck is neat. So much emotion and nostalgia in this one and the last one! Such a skill to be able to channel that repeatedly

Maybe you can convince Jeff that black latex chef gloves is a fetish thing and he will be more okay with it
