it seems like there has been a lot of C minor in the air recently. a couple weeks ago i was going though some voice memos and found the seed of this dirge that i had starting mapping out back in June. i got stuck in an inspiration loop listening to Napear's week 27 track, 'Inner Sanctum,' and neon liminal's witchy track from Week 24.
i saw Napear's generous offer to incorporate 'Inner Sanctum' into other musics and i started playing along with it and got a little hypnotized.  yikes

my acoustic guitar and main vocal were tracked live all in one (long) take. i added bass, electric guitar, and a vocal harmony, and good buddy Gary sent over his beautiful tenor sax part direct from Toronto, CA. Napear not only sent over the 'Inner Sanctum' stems, but was very helpful in lending ears, suggestions, and notes for the mix. thanks so much, Buddy! i'm over the (buck) moon with how this turned out.

things feel so heavy right now, i know it's not just here. just wanted to say that it has been really good for my mental health to be part of such a supportive and creative community like Weekly Beats. thank you and take care, Friends.

This turned out so awesome... I mean it's dark, and sad, and absolutely rips my heart out... but man, it is a BIG MOOD... super glad to be a part of this one.

Side note, I think I might add "Ambient Spellcaster" to my official title.

This is so powerful. When the rumbling dirge started I had to pause the music for a second, because I thought a massive truck was going by outside, or the WWII airplane they sometimes fly on weekends... somehow appropriate... but it was all the music. Incredible. Ghostbumps and new sax friends.

And all that ... and then the vocals! Absolutely haunting. The greatest experience I can have from anything - music, a book, a memory - is to have it haunt me. This will haunt me for a long time.

Obligatory Neon flashbacks: That sax, that guitar, that drone! Bohren & Der Club of Gore would be so proud. And your vocals in this particular mood really resurrects a moment from A Silver Mt. Zion for me, I believe that particular album was mourning their dog. Dog dirge. Sad! The good sad.

This sounds so good.  A great collab and love the whole tone and mood.  From Napear's ambient spellcasting, bluesy strums, sultry sax and your vocals it conveys that heavy feeling a lot of us have been feeling this year.  Lyrics hit especially close. "youre drowning in a thimble" oof!  Not sure if you've heard Chelsea Wolfe's music before but this reminded me a bit of her acoustic songs she does.  It's also storming out right now so the whole mood hit even more.  heart

beautiful and so sad! good art comes from suffering! thanks for sharing! take care and glad you're part of wb!

Heavy stuff…very overwhelming, but somehow soothing at the same time. It is somehow sad, beautiful and strangely uplifting at the same time. It evokes same kind of feelings as some more sombre moments of GYBE… makes one quite sad, but at the same time makes you feel that you are not alone with those emotions and gives you hope in that. Things might change…. Btw, that saxophone stuff is a bull’s eye  here…extremely fitting and complimentary here.

Sounds great!  Haunting.  Very cool collaboration.

what a mood. The crickets in the background, the soundstage and mix with the sax panned and the ambient synth behind it all. Just wonderful, in a somber, current weight of the world kind of way. Not to mention those lyrics, oof.

Cripes this is so good. Right off the sax instantly transported me.
Amazing work.

This is beautiful, moody, sad, haunting and just overall amazing. Seems very pertinent to the point in time we're in. Incredible work.

Definitely been feeling the heaviness.  Music is as good of an antidote to it that I'm aware of.  The sax really jumped out at me right away and adds a a nice somber color to the texture here.  Everything works together really well though to create a mood.  Another nice collab for sure.

Dark lyrics, kind of hopeful music.

Very nicely done. This is awesome that you are able to do some collaborations here. Well played.

This track crawls under my skin. Goosebumps. 100% bright eyes quality.  Fantastic work from all of you. Bravo.

Wow, heavy and beautiful. Great job.

goodness gracious, thank you so much!! and hoooo lemme tell you, i had some intense mixing moments with the dirge rumbles. it like... fused with my soul or something. and i would forget what was going on/ where i was and thought there was some train or helicopter on our front porch and then the song would stop and i'd be like OH YEAH, IT'S JUST NAPEAR.  big_smile

and yeah, Gary just killed it on the tenor sax. such an empathetic and deep listener/ player.

i really needed to pour myself into this one last week. thx for going there with me/ us

oh yeah, storm is perfect for this one. i was gonna be pretentious and suggest people listen with headphones outside at night barefoot or something, but you used your wizardly powers and conjured a storm!
i really like what i've heard from Chelsea Wolfe, need to check out some acoustic songs.

really appreciate that. and yeah, at first i was getting mad at the cricket outside the window when i was ready to track the vocals/ acoustic, but then i realized that they are probably also in mourning and needing to sing through it. i'm so glad they did

Awesome collab! Love the sax, steady ebb and flow of synth and strums, vox, water visuals - the whole package. Somber and flowing just like a grayscale river

woah, peak slowcore vibes. That sax, so good. [I've missed sax.. this inspired me to put some Morphine on my spotify.] And the lyrics! damn. definitely one of my fave WB tracks this year.

It's a tasteful masterpiece. A great collaboration!

thanks, KAMI Lime!!

Powerful. Feels like all the sounds together add up to a grander whole, expressing a deep sorrow that's been building up for a while. And in this track it is expressed very evocatively

I agree that this community has been very helpful and meaningful, and am glad for the opportunity to enjoy music as this, plus the supportive community of coursem

Great how this all came together, I'm hearing lots of intense music this week, maybe it is just the climate of things in the world.  This is another great piece of music you and your friends have provided us, opening line really sets the mood, love the length of this and that middle section with the sax.

Really lovely organic feel to it and all the parts complement each other well.  Kind of reminds me of Low in feel.  Very nice.

Is this all synth?

the climate has definitely been feeling heavy, and yeah - i noticed that too in several of the tracks last week. appreciate the kind words, Jason

oh wow, thank you. LOW has been a huge band for me, so that is a very meaningful compliment. Mimi forever  heart

the ambient world swirling around in the shadows is all courtesy of Napear. he described it as: "a stack of granular synths and other convenience VSTs from NI (Ashlight, Lores, Arkhis, Fables, etc)"
ou can hear his track on it's own here:
https://weeklybeats.com/napear/music/inner-sanctum/

and then the rest is what i recorded: acoustic guitar and main vocal were tracked live all in one (long) take. i added bass, electric guitar, and a vocal harmony, and good buddy Gary sent over his beautiful tenor sax part direct from Toronto, CA.
lmk if you have any questions, and thanks so much for listening!

Yes, it was really sad when she passed.  A big fan of the last 2 Low albums.  Really like the other albums too but the last two really pushed the boundaries.

i totally agree. it's tough for me (emotionally) to listen to "Hey What," but WOW they hit on something so unique and powerful on that and "Double Negative." what a discography though...

emily and i recorded a version of the "Ones and Sixes" gem 'What Part of Me' that was included in a tribute/ fundraiser compilation after Mimi passed. no obligation, but if you feel like checking it out it is track 3 here:

cheers and thanks again!

Yes to dirge. It's time for a dirge, and this dirges in the dirgiest way. Such a perfect words for the style. I feel you about the times, the feeling of right now. Sigh. The gets it and is cathartic.
Wow that sax, it take me. Nice to hear the spell casting of Napear happening under hear, so cool to use that.

The sax and acoustic guitar create such a dark mood coupled with Napear's ambient spellcasting, love how cohesive these different elements feel together. Cathartic as all heck, well done smile
