Freakout!

By jimmac on January 6, 2024 11:20 am

Teenage engineering have released the EP-133, so obviously I had to get... an Arturia Microfreak. Weeklybeats 2024 is on. Let's hope I can keep it up.

I know nothing about the Microfreak yet. Sequenced by the M8, I wanted to play some of the arps on the keyboard, but between plugging the recorder and charging the batteries I forgot. So it's just me twiddling the knobs and playing back the patterns on the M8. I'll do better next time, I promise!

Super nice! The Microfreak arps sound really nice with the live modulation. Glad to see you back here this year and excited to see what you put together in the coming weeks. Off to a great start! heart

so freakin' cool jimmac!

Definitely enjoying the rhythmic echo all over this track! Very cool!

wow, this sounds really good and rich for just a handful of M8 chains! really liked how the microfreak synth sound evolves

Loving the MicroFreak tweaking!
Nothing beats sequencing hardware synths, hands-on modulation is so fun

haha yes! you didn't give in to the teenage engineering speak and spell:

(just kidding, i'm sure it's awesome.. but you twist the arturia to bring equal thrill!)

i love the running-man atmosphere of this track: slightly unsettling in a beautiful way, on and on still with that seductive rush of energy.

Raja: hehe. Yea I'm not hatin' on it. It does look like a fun machine, and the styling is pretty dope, I must admit.

It's fun to watch you twiddling the knobs in real time.  Squeezing some cool sounds out of that thing already.  Should be fun to see where it goes.

Nice soundscapes. Is the microfreak just running through the M8 FX, or is there more on top?

Aww yiss jimmac is back!

This track sounds HUGE.  I've been curious about the microfreak for a while, but I haven't found anywhere to demo it   But... if this is really just you twiddling the knobs and playing back the patterns on the M8, then it seems like it's every bit as awesome as the hype from a few years back.  The video really sells the performance aspect of it, too.

knob twiddling is fun in this one, and when you add a snare to the beat around 2:30. actually the video is great! wait it seems like the beat is not clocked with the arp, is it? still works tho

>@naught101: Nice soundscapes. Is the microfreak just running through the M8 FX, or is there more on top?

Just the M8, indeed. But all of it -- delay, reverb, chorus and amp.

@ineff: I hope to actually get to the strings and grains (karplus-strong), which is why I've gotten it. I planned to just sample things back into the m8, not to sequence it, but Sundays always approach too fast. Panic plan.

@horatluromanic: Gosh, I didn't even notice.

proves you don't really need anything more than arps and a beat sometimes, love the build starting at 2:25
