Where Were You Last Night

By Jim Wood on May 16, 2014 1:00 am

Time to break out the cello. Recording of my somewhat-less-than-professional improvisation, lightly tuned in Melodyne, assembled in Live. Nasal timbres produced by shifting formants way up in Melodyne. No effects other than some compression. 120 BPM, G Major (approx.).

I was in bed.

You play cello? And you did not tell the world?! This is a really great piece. Nice blend between acoustic sound source and electronic wrangling.

Haha. Thanks for the compliment; there will probably be more cello in the coming weeks.

that track is a mixed bag of alien octupus exploring human instruments and soundscapes + traveling through decades of earthly musical developments ... real cool!

Excellent manipulations of acoustic material.  The manipulations really highlight the particular harmonics.  We're kind of in a similar realm this week.

that's certainly high praise! Thanks! It was more a case of taking a dog of a performance, and making… dogade?

Yes, but you did yours in real time, which makes it more of a performance than a salvage job smile

Love the organic environment in this one. Super immersive

Excellent balance between the acoustic and processed sounds, and impressively combining listenability with some very interesting sounds. Well done!

Thanks! I checked out your website: nice stuff -- and I totally agree with you about spiders (my wife put up a spider crossing sign in our plant room so that people would watch out for them).

Fellow cellist here... thinking about dusting it off this week... you definitely got some really cool sounds out of it.  I always enjoy when cellos are used in unconventional ways.

That's not so much using it in unconventional ways as it is a by-product of not having played for four years (hence the use of Melodyne to correct intonation).

Very enjoyable, always like listening to music I wouldn't have a clue how to make

Thank you. I feel the same way about a lot of the music on this site.

Yes, just cello -- sort of an experiment to see how much I could get out of the recording. With this kind of enthusiastic response, you bet they'll be more cello in the future. Thanks to all for your kind comments!

Quite amazing sounds!
