Poor Boy

By Jim Wood on October 18, 2014 4:54 pm

Instrumentals: "Poor Boy." (two separate recordings). Vocals: "Rock Island Line" (field recording). All from Lomax Library of Congress recordings (1939), tuned to D major pentatonic. Additional doubling of some sections using Live's MIDI-to-melody function. Thanx and a tip of the Hatlo hat to Vince Giles for his suggestion of adding a high-pass filter on a return track for added sparkle on the vocals.

track got me hooked from the beginning. that smooth synth sound goes well with the chopped blues guitar!

Thanks! It took a while to come up to a sound that complemented the rough guitar.

Very cool stuff per usual, Jim! Love that guitar and those vox/ choppiness are just right

This is so cool Jim. The blues-ish-ness that's just not quite blues really does it for me. And the vocals, when they come in, are just so perfect.

Gorgeous piece assembled from great sources.  Extremely cool cubist take on the Lomax archive!

This is so awesome man, goddamn its good.

Makes me think of if Alt- j was less pop sounding and maybe also C2C. great work man!

No Alt-j in my playlists, but some C2C -- I agree;  but mainly I was thinking of Akufen's "The World Wanna Know."

I caught the blues feel as it went on but the beginning sort of had a "world music" kind of vibe to me oddly enough.  The choppiness mixed with the vintage sounding recording also creates a cool disorienting feeling.

Thank you! Blues would probably qualify as a variety of world music, considering all the elements that went into it.

Brilliant track, love how it's removed from, but still relates to the tradition of the source material.

great intro and as always a true mastery of vox chopping and transforming. Hats off!

I had that same worldmusic-vibe.
Nice chopping as always!

Love the feel of the track. The traditional sound of the slide guitar chopped up with the synth and vocals really create someting fresh.

Thank you, George!

I just got back from a blues festival, this is the most refreshing thing I've heard all week!
