Heat Dome

By Jim Wood on July 7, 2018 12:40 am

A bit late to the party, since our heat wave in New Mexico has been – at least temporarily – broken by the onset of the monsoon season. Voice: chopped BBC weather forecast 6/30/18. Some rudimentary scratching. Unstable pitch.

We had a bit of a cool down for the 4th which was nice, but then the heat came right back.  Very creative use of the weather forecast.  I could imagine the TV screen melting during the report.

Like a lot of your tracks, kind of has that melting sound quality to it.  Always enjoyable.  Perhaps even more apt for a heatwave inspired piece.  How hot in centigrade did it get to?

Oh this weather reporter definitly was influenced by the heat smile
Very nice use of the weather report. And these synth have a real nice melting feel to it.
Lovely work!

The unstable pitch gives out some great "melty" synths! I enjoyed the trap-style drums too, they tie-in perfectly big_smile

Good stuff! I really dig those synths

Had to look up the conversion: topped out at 37 celsius. But Santa Fe is at 2134 meters (another conversion), so that's pretty hot for here.

Thanks for your comments!

Scratching and pitch shifting are very cool. Chopped audio of BBC sounds like it really wants to break into a rap! The warbly pitch bits also give it a trippy old film track quality. New Mexico has monsoons? I thought it was just hot or damn hot in NM. smile

Great synth sounds and vocals, and dig the scratching, it all feels melty and HOT.
It hit the 90's Fahrenheit where I am in Washington this week ... next comes the forest fires ... monsoons sound nice.

Definitely getting up there then.  Australia is prone to heatwaves in summer.  We're usually guaranteed to hit 40+ for a few days in a row.  Can be brutal after a while!

The NM monsoons usually start right around the beginning of July; if they don't, we're in BIG trouble.

40+ sounds brutal. Low humidity at least (not by the coast, obviously)?

Definitely a dry heat even though I live literally one street from the beach!  I can get some reprieve in the evenings with a sea breeze if I'm lucky though.  The city stays stinking hot for days as all the cement and buildings heat up and take quite a while to cool again.

You are quite creative in the heat!  I'm a sucker for vocal chops, I love it

the scratching is H O T

Great hip hop feel and the vocal grinds are cool as I can pick out a few key words.  The slow scratching works thematically, sounding like the vinyls melted in the sheer heat!  Same with the pitch bends.  Well done.  Great marriage of theme + execution.

Thanks! More so once the heat abates.

I was slow scratching because I didn't want to ruin the needle. ::)

ha ha ha, that's so "punk"

This is absolutely gorgeus in a nice demented way! Sort of catches the mood of heatwave too...

I like how every sounds blends into the other, creates that melting environment, the slow downs and speed ups that happen specifically on the word "humidity,"are very effective.

This is HAWT and I'm jealous of your heat wave. Freezing in the southern hemisphere.

This definitely has that 'face melting humid pants" feeling  (from Miami, I know!)  Those wavy pads are so cool too.  Yais!

A heatwave in musical form, makes me think of a vinyl record left in the sun.
Wonderful track!
