Shanty Chival

By jemmons on February 13, 2022 7:48 pm

My uncle had a Mockingboard for his Apple ][ and a game called “Chivalry” that I loved. I was trying to do an homage to its opening theme — then I thought, “But what if waltz?” And then, “But also shanty?” And here we are.

Straight off the M8, all FM. I'm abusing the M8’s chorus a bit in this. It just sounds so good!

This immediately put a big goofy smile on my face. heart I love it.

Wait, this is 3/4 time! (Or 6/8?) What was it like programming a non-4/4 beat on the M8?

(My entry this week was in 6/8 time, and I did it in Live. I'd love to figure out how to do that or 12/8 on my M8.)

3/4, and I really like it, actually! There are two basic ways to go about it. By default, each phrase is 16 steps, of course. So you can either put a HOP FX where you want to jump to the next phrase (usually after 9 or 12 steps), or adjust the default Groove to only allot ticks to the first 9 or 12 steps. If I'm doing polymeters, I'll use the former. If the whole thing is 3/4 (like this song), I'll use the groove method instead.

Shanty Waltz really is something only chiptune can do. It works really well.

I just added the "waltz" tags to my wb45, then clicked on it to see what other waltzes were out there.  This waltzhanty is glorious―I love how the solo at 00:45 is repeated as a call & response duet between the leads at 1:23+.

On a technical level, it's cool you did it with the groove method, too―even with the tick-counting feature of firmware 2.7+, it can be a real a challenge to keep lined up over an entire song.
